Three members of LNA unit found shot dead south of Tripoli

Three soldiers attached to Libyan National Army (LNA) and two of their friends were found shot dead today in Wadi Rabie, near Tripoli International Airport.

The three were members of Brigade 103, which belongs to the LNA’s western command. In a statement this evening mourning them, it said they had been shot “treacherously.”

Naming four of them as Ghassan Shahima, Wajdi Shahima, Ahmed Al-Alem and Ahmed Al-Yacoubi (the identity of the fifth man has not been announced), it said they were originally from Tajoura and had been visiting friends and family in the capital for the first time in a long time. They had then gone missing, only to be found dead at dawn this morning.

It vowed to avenge their deaths which it blamed on Tripoli’s militias. It did not state which ones.

Wadi Rabie, consisting mainly of farms, is largely in the hands of militias opposed to both the Presidency Council and the LNA.

Brigade 103, formerly Brigad 101, is operating in the Bir Ghanem area, 90 kilometres southwest of the capital.

Essallak: There Was No Agreement Signed During The Abu Dhabi Meeting – | CT MENA - Security - CT, Organised Crime, Immigration - MENA - Libya | Scoop.it

A spokesman for the President of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Essallak, on Wednesday, said that the meeting of Abu Dhabi did not result in the signing of an agreement, but was only a consultative meeting.

During a press conference, Essallak stated that there was a consensus at the Abu Dhabi meeting on reducing the transitional period, unifying the state institutions, completing the parliamentary and presidential elections before the end of the year, and providing the appropriate atmosphere for them and supporting the efforts of the UN envoy in this regard.

Essallak confirmed that Al-Sarraj stressed several constants, including the civil state, and that there is no military solution to the crisis, indicating that there is no alternative to the option of dialogue and negotiation to heal the wounds between the Libyans.

The head of the presidential council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the leader of the Karama operation, Khalifa Haftar, gathered on Thursday in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, agreeing that the military would be subordinate to the civil authority, ending the transitional stages and holding a democratic elections.

UN chief welcomes Libya rivals’ agreement to hold elections

The United Nations secretary-general has welcomed an agreement between rival Libyan leaders to hold elections.

The agreement came in a meeting Wednesday in the United Arab Emirates' capital between Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, head of Libya's U.N.-recognized government in Tripoli in the west, and Gen. Khalifa Hifter, the commander of Libya's national army which dominates the east.

In a statement late Friday, Antonio Guterres commended both parties' "agreement on the need to end the transitional stages in Libya through the holding of general elections."

Hifter and Sarraj had agreed to a Paris-brokered deal in May 2018 and hold a nationwide election by the end of the year. But their disputes delayed those plans.
