Do Kids Need Special Online Protections or Do We All Need Them?

Do Kids Need Special Online Protections or Do We All Need Them? | Corridor of learning | Scoop.it

We have always taken child safety more seriously than adult safety, even where children are not necessarily at greater risk than adults. It's probably instinctual. As every parent knows, protecting one's offspring is not something we even have to think about. We just do it.

Children not always a special case.

14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools

14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools | Corridor of learning | Scoop.it

Saying that it has always been this way, doesn’t count as a legitimate justification to why it should stay that way. Teacher and administrators all over the world are doing amazing things, but some of the things we are still doing, despite all the new solutions, research and ideas out there is, to put it mildly, incredible.

I’m not saying we should just make the current system better… we should change it into something else.

I have compiled a list of 14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools and it is my hope that this will inspire lively discussions about the future of education.

Want to Fix Education? Start Addressing Poverty. | CTQ

Let me ask you a simple question:  How closely associated do you think consuming a boatload of alcohol and dying of cirrhosis of the liver are?  Stated another way, how convinced are you that people who spend their lives on the wrong side of the bottle are more likely to die of cirrhosis than the teetotallers in your community's Anti-Liquor League?

Don't Help Your Kids With Their Homework

Don't Help Your Kids With Their Homework | Corridor of learning | Scoop.it

And other insights from a ground- breaking study of how parents impact children’s academic achievement.

One of the central tenets of raising kids in America is that parents should be actively involved in their children’s education: meeting with teachers, volunteering at school, helping with homework, and doing a hundred other things that few working parents have time for. These obligations are so baked into American values that few parents stop to ask whether they’re worth the effort.

The corridor of uncertainty: Breaking up is hard to do

The corridor of uncertainty: Breaking up is hard to do | Corridor of learning | Scoop.it

We often base our calls for a better use of technology in education on the grounds that students are demanding change. Since they are mostly experienced users of computers, mobiles, social media and gaming they will naturally want to use these technologies and tools in school or university. There is of course a degree of truth here but it's not unusual to see reports of students demanding more lectures and classroom teaching rather than online delivery as well as preferring textboooks to net-based resources. Sometimes the students are more traditional and conservative than the teachers, despite their dependence on technology outside education.
