- Nate Silver: How Does He do it?

- Nate Silver: How Does He do it? | Corporate Challenge of Big Data | Scoop.it

Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard that Nate Silver correctly predicted the Presidential winner for every single state. What are the odds of that? Sure there are indicators that could lead someone to believe that a state would be “red” or “blue.” We can all see that California is more liberal and likely to end up a “blue state,” while Oklahoma is always a “red state.” Those are obvious, but to guess all 50 states correctly? It must be a fluke. Bet he couldn’t do it twice.

Unlock all the data in your organization with sub-second speed - Search & Discovery Applications | MarkLogic | Corporate Challenge of Big Data | Scoop.it

As data explodes in the enterprise, precise search and discovery of information is needed for mission critical decisions.

With sub-second search capabilities over billions of records and the ability for 100’s of thousands of simultaneous targeted searches, MarkLogic provides the most advanced Big Data search.

With MarkLogic, organizations can index and search data and content “as-is” from multiple, ever-changing sources – and create multiple highly tuned search interfaces for their users and customers, leveraging a single search and database infrastructure. By making every element of the data available for search without knowing the questions ahead of time, and executing searches in real-time, MarkLogic overcomes the barriers that make traditional search solutions limited in scope and slow to produce the business data they are searching. MarkLogic also enables organizations to remove the traditional complexity of connecting search solutions to databases because we provide search as part of our Enterprise NoSQL database.

Winning the Next Wave of the Internet: Mobile

Winning the Next Wave of the Internet: Mobile | Corporate Challenge of Big Data | Scoop.it
Mobile technologies and applications are changing all the rules. Take these 3 risks to keep your business safe

1. Create an app that facilitates a process your potential customers want to do easier. This could be calculating calories, tracking workouts, or some other activity that is related to your product offering, but not a direct sales pitch.
2. Don't just create an app that has links back to your website. Offer a service or value your customers would appreciate.
3. Don't make an app designed only for what you want to sell. Make it designed for what and how the customer wants to buy.

Traditional file systems would require the use of RAID to accomplish this same level of data durability, but, in HDFS’s case, it is done without dependency on the underlining hardware. HDFS divides large files into smaller individual blocks and distributes these blocks across multiple nodes.

Organisational kingdoms, corporate politics, presence = productivity and silo thinking are outdated. | Corporate Challenge of Big Data | Scoop.it

Arguing with (work) cultural change is like swallowing an elephant in one go.

Firstly, let’s agree on the fact that almost all companies are in desperate need for cultural change. Organisational kingdoms, corporate politics, presence = productivity and silo thinking are outdated. Formal structures have to be filled with networks of expertise, experience and individual commitment.

Requiring that government data be stored domestically and handled by U.S. citizens is counterproductive. To be sure, encryption comes with its own security problems -- most notably key management -- but those pale in comparison to the challenges associated with the geographic mandate.

Focus on creating a natural collaborative experience. Focus on providing an easy & intuitive user experience. Focus on dissolving collaborative islands- don’t create more with social tools.
