Why CONTESTS Are KING: Crowdsource Content & Build Community & Work Great on Social via @HomesDotCom

Erica Campbell Byrum - Homes.com, Social Fresh EAST 2014
Erica Byrum takes a bit to get rolling, you can begin watching at 1:41, but what she is saying about crowdsourcing content via contests is valuable so hang with it.

The real diamond is how contests unearth your 1% Contributors and 9% supporters. Homes.com was smart enough to immediately give thier 1% a mission and I love and plan to steal the "Blogger Ambassador Program" great name add a Social Media Ambassador and you have two sticks you can rub together to create fire.

Stay with this video to hear about the power of serendipitous content their content unearthed, content Homes.com was smart enough to double down on. The Contest was a flop, they thought until they stumbled over the single piece of content that "continues to give back to us this day fast forwarding 3 years later".

Homes.com doesn't do what I would suggest - create a page with a clear Call To Action (an ask) to join the Blogger Ambassador program. Instead they surface their 1% Contributors via contests:  http://blog.homes.com/category/contests/

I like the dedicated page that explains benefits, shares why you created the program and how your Blogger Ambassadors program. Inside of some things I don't agree with (cash is always a powerful incentive) are great tips I do agree with (surprise works, double down on what works, give 1% Contributors a job, use no more than 2 social nets at once). So more GOOD advice than BAD here.

"Contests create gifts that keep on giving" says Eric Campbell Byrum from Homes.com.

Video Game Players Are Storytellers David Cage TED Talk

Video Game Players Are Storytellers David Cage TED Talk  | Must Play | Scoop.it

Have you ever watched a film or read a novel, wishing that you could change the narrative to save your favorite character? Game designer David Cage allows you do just that in his video games, where players make decisions that shape an ever-changing plot.

In a talk and live demo, Cage presents a scene from his new project, letting the audience control a character's decisions. "Interactive storytelling can be what cinema was in the 20th century: an art that deeply changes its time," Cage says.

Final Fight's hulking beefcake Abigail Hammers Street Fighter V This Week

Final Fight's hulking beefcake Abigail Hammers Street Fighter V This Week  | Must Play | Scoop.it

Abigail Rocks
Final Fight's hulking beefcake Abigail is coming to Street Fighter V as season two's latest DLC fighter. Abigail is a downloadable character available starting 7.25.17.

Abigail rocks as the Rolling Stone outlines:

"The massive character made his first appearance in the Street Fighter franchise in Street Fighter 3: Second Impact. In Street Fighter V, he'll come to terrorize Metro City Bay Area once more with three costumes, a story chapter, and his own stage.

As you might have guessed by the tires coiled around his biceps, Abigail is a monstrous gear head. When he's not causing trouble, he's driving cars—and when he's not doing either, he's probably in his shop shown in his stage during the reveal trailer. His story chapter will follow his brawls through Metro City to find his missing monster truck."

Abigail rocks!!!

Is this Video Our Hyper-Realty Future? Not so Much...

Hyper-Reality presents a provocative and kaleidoscopic new vision of the future, where physical and virtual realities have merged, and the city is saturated…
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

When The Machines Take Over

The "hyper-reality" shared in this video may be true on some level, but we doubt it. We are and will remain HUMANS and so we will use new tools to search for answers to the big questions - why are we here, where is meaning, value, and truth.

The part we buy is the seamless integration of things hardly "seamless" today, but every tool is a means to some great end. This video posits a world where tool usage and meaning are the same thing.

Read Ev Williams, Medium's founder, on why Medium is NOT a publishing tool for more on why we think this crazy, chaotic video has most of our future dead wrong.

Less and Less for More and More - Video Game Developers Turn to Micropayments   | Must Play | Scoop.it

Video Game Development Trends
Many trends start in video games.

  • "Leveling Up"
  • Content as Increasingly Addictive
  • Content as a seemingly interactive game
  • DIY - Create your games on our platform

And now the video game biz is embracing micropayments or providing less and less for more and more. Fascinating post with overtones for e-commerce, content marketing, mobile marketing, and digital marketing. http://www.growngaming.com/feature/microtransactions-new-dlc/

Via Jonathan Birkenstamm
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Interesting post about how video games are becoming micropayment gateways. We suspect that trend, one we observed with Harvard Business Review about five years go, will multiply and morph into many business channels.

Content Marketing & the Game Within the Game in HBO's Westworld

Content Marketing & the Game Within the Game in HBO's Westworld | Must Play | Scoop.it

Content Marketing & the Game Within The Game
HBO's Westworld is an amazing achievement. It makes for great television and it can teach web designers a thing or two if we're listening. We shared 5 Content Marketing Lessons the show shares including:

  • Show Don't Tell
  • Tease Never Bore
  • Beauty solves half the Battle
  • Believe and MOVE
  • Create another Loop

on Curagami: http://www.curagami.com/content-marketing-five-lessons-from-hbo-westworld/

Westworld  is a game. These days, thanks to ubiquitous smartphones and technology, everything is a game. Westworld's game is operating on many levels simultaneously including:

  • Surface where those on "vacation" wreck havoc on robots
  • Robot on Robot game wondering who will win
  • The corporation game wondering who will be the hero and keep their jobs
  • Robots vs. Humans with a hard rain about to fall on greedy, violent humans
  • The game within the game

When Ed Harris scalped a robot finding a maze the game within the game was exposed. Harris' character is a thirty year Westworld veteran.

Viewers are left wondering if Harris is rogue and on an unanticipated quest or if he is part of the "infinite" progression of the game. Planned or unplanned Harris is a master at the gruff voice and steely stare.

On the web everything is a game. Your customers want to complete, cooperate and join. Are you asking for help? Do you know your movement? Westworld's creators are playing many games all at once, and doing so brilliantly, with grace and joy. Your or my website should be so lucky.

I'll try to remember to craft multi-level games in the e-commerce sites Curagami helps design. You should steal Westworld's Game within a Game idea for your web design.

Gamification: Winning the Loyalty Game

Gamification: Winning the Loyalty Game | Must Play | Scoop.it
The fundamental goal of every loyalty program is to engage the customer. How do you do that? The equation seems ridiculously simple — excitement equals engagement.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Games vs Loyalty

You may not think of airline miles as a game, but it is. Not all games create, develop or confirm loyalty. Some games are played with the express purpose of being disloyal.

Deal busters, or people who know what brand they want and are pitting one retailer against another to get the best price, aren't very loyal. They are playing their own game and their winning may be your brand, website or company's losing.

Better to understand how to use game mechanics to increase engagement, listening and curation as this post explains.
