Diane J. Humetewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and former U.S. attorney in Arizona, has beennominated to serve on the U.S. District Court for the district of Arizona as a federal judge. If confirmed, she would be the first active member of a Native American reservation, and first Native American woman to serve as a federal judge. The Supreme Court recently struck down crucial provisions of the Voting Rights Act – opening the door to widespread voter disenfranchisement – and yesterday Hillary Clinton called for quick action to guarantee the right to vote for every citizen in this country. She noted that, “Anyone who says that racial discrimination is no longer a problem in American elections must not be paying attention.” She continued, “Congress should move quickly to pass legislation to replace those portions of the act that the court struck down.”

I'm so glad Trayvon's case didn't get five minutes of fame and then dissapear. The fact people realised how injust the trial was and are still stepping forward to speak out is incredibly important.
I would not only have a unit on laws (civics and citizenship), but also make mention of Trayvon Martin and other prolific cases on rasicm and rights during history units; as important cases like these need to be mentioned to educate! |
