PIRatE Lab's insight:
In this news report Seth Bornstein mentions that the members of the United Nations have a deadline to submit their report on how the county will fight climate change. Most nations haven't submit their reports yet so the UN climate chief suggests to have the plan well thought out instead and submitted late.

What does an acid trip typically feel like? Each person’s experience with acid will be different. Indeed, each trip may be different. One might be very light, but others can take a frightening and overwhelming turn. Symptoms may begin to show 20 to 90 minutesTrusted Source after taking a dose. The main episode can last several hours. Acid is a long-acting drug. It stays in the body 6 to 15 hoursTrusted Source. Most acid trips won’t last more than 9 hours. The trip During this period of “tripping” or active effects, you may begin to experience sensationalized perceptions of what’s happening around you. This can include “seeing” color or “tasting” sounds. Stationary items, like furniture, may begin to “move” or swell or shrink before your eyes. Coming down Coming down from the trip will feel like you’re gradually returning to Earth. Signs may begin to lessen in intensity. You may feel tired after getting through the hours-long trip and want to sleep. Afterglow An “afterglow” is possible for several hours after the end of the trip, too. This may feel like everything is “lighter” or “brighter” than before the trip. You may also have moments of flashbacks for several hours, even days, after the acid trip is over. Microdosing A microdose is a small dose of a psychedelic drug like LSD, often one-tenth of a normal dose. It’s sometimes used to help treat symptoms of anxiety and depression, but it’s not meant to completely encompass your day. However, little is known about the long-term effects of this practice. This article goes over how nature can help us achieve our goal set forth by the paris climate agreement, which is to limit global temperature rise to less than 2 degrees celcius. If we are smart and careful we can use nature as our ally to help fight climate change. However if we are not so smart nature could hinder our fight with rising global temperatures and contribute ultimately to natures desctruction.

Chippenham, Wiltshire, rarely floods but the effects of Storm Bert are still clear 100 days on.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
It has been over 100 days since Storm Bert caused severe flooding in Chippenham, Wiltshire. The storm, which struck in late November 2024, led to significant damage in the town center, with many organizations still unable to use their buildings. Residents and business owners have described the experience as surreal, with ongoing recovery efforts highlighting the community's resilience

However the researchers say butterflies may be able to recover if urgent conservation measures are taken.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
I really hope the proper conservation measures can be taken to help our butterfly populations. Butterflies are such important and beautiful creatures.
Marisol Pantoja's comment, March 7, 4:08 PM
This is a kin to the polar bears going extinct. Are butterflies going extinct this generations new environmental concern? The article did mention that butterflies can recover quickly, so there is hope to boost number back up but that is only with the help of conservation and habitat restoration.
Lauren Sauceda's comment, March 7, 11:48 PM
Articles like these can be short in writing, but so impactful in numbers and statistics. There has been an ongoing decline in butterfly populations for now 25 years as the article mentions, with declines noted since 2000, and although these species are still with us now, the rate of loss in these populations can be detrimental. To me, these articles truly shed light and almost "put in your face" how in danger these species are to extinction and how important it is to act fast on issues like these. Some populations of butterflies have declined as much as 90%, which to some might just be a number, but to others like us in ESRM can be eye opening and create even more devotion to saving our plant and creatures that live among it.
Brandon Hidalgo's comment, March 8, 2:46 AM
This is such a heartbreaking article and I've heard much more on this already. A new study shows a severe drop in butterfly populations across North America with some species dropping as much as 90%. Thus, this is clearly urgent. Especially as butterflies aren't only valuable for their beauty. They also act as major pollinators as well as food for some of our beloved birds. Furthermore, they act as a sort of indicator of the health of an ecosystem due to their sensitivity to environmental changes.

How Hurricanes Can Fuel Wildfires in the Southeast

How Hurricanes Can Fuel Wildfires in the Southeast | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
A number of fires broke out in the Southeastern U.S. last week. Hurricane-downed trees may help fuel the flames, experts say.
David McCarthy's comment, March 14, 4:37 PM
By destroying trees, which dry out and provide ideal fuel, hurricanes can create conditions for wildfires. Add some drought, it's essentially a formula for disaster. I didn't think about it like that, that is wild.
Brandon Hidalgo's comment, March 15, 3:00 AM
Its so important to be able to understand the interconnectedness of these disasters . Better understanding of how and why these events are getting worse is pivotal to make any genuine change. This is an example of climate change feeding into itself in a loop.

Atmospheric river poised to hit California, brings risk of debris flows | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The weather phenomena are common for California winters, but they could cause dangerous debris flows or mudslides in recently burned areas.

An atmospheric river is bringing heavy rain to California, with risks of flooding, landslides, and debris flows, especially in wildfire-affected areas. Efforts to limit wildfires in a conservative swath of northern Colorado are the latest casualty of the Trump administration’s on-and-off federal spending freeze
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Federal funding freezes under Trump have stalled wildfire prevention in Colorado, leaving nonprofits like the Poudre River coalition unable to access grants. Legal challenges have paused some cuts, but wildfire preparedness remains uncertain.
Natalie Jones's comment, March 7, 7:30 PM
Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of what we are going to see regarding this administration making budget cuts and cancelling funding for environmental efforts. If we continue to ignore climate change is a real issue and threat, we are going to start seeing the consequences of these "freezes" and budget cuts rather quickly
Barbara Kim's comment, March 7, 11:08 PM
I feel like this new administration isn’t fully considering the serious consequences of these budget cuts and funding freezes. By cutting or delaying funds for wildfire prevention and other environmental efforts, they’re putting communities at greater risk. These decisions could lead to more frequent and severe disasters, and it seems like they’re not recognizing how damaging this will be in the long term
