Presentations can make or break any pitch for new business or business finance, so it is really important, that your presentations really sing. As most business owners do not possess the skills to create a beautiful presentation, they often fall far short of what is ideal, in handling important business situations. To improve, a business owner must either outsource, or develop their own skills. Those looking to develop their own skills, will find these 5 video tutorials a great starting point.

What the Internet Actually Looks Like

What the Internet Actually Looks Like | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

Rooms and rooms of cables, switches, and freezing cold air. It’s difficult to define “the cloud.” Even more difficult, perhaps, is photographing it. But that’s precisely what Peter Garritano set out to do with his photo essay The Internet. Taken over the course of the past year, Garritano visited five of New York City’s most interconnected spaces, colloquially called “carrier hotels.” Inside these buildings, like 60 Hudson and 111 8th Avenue, hundreds of fiber-optic cables, fans, servers, and machinery connect to form the Internet.

Bettina Thompson's insight:

Holy Cow!  The internet of things is a complex system of spaghetti!

It truly is humbling and eye opening to see the inner workings of the thing we are all so addicted to and dependent on!

And I thought the wires behind my desk were a melange of  wires, wait til you get a look at these babies!

"Oh what a tangled web we weave...",  if 'Will' only knew what that could imply in 2016.

Calming Your Brain During Conflict

Calming Your Brain During Conflict | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

Conflict wreaks havoc on our brains. We are groomed by evolution to protect ourselves whenever we sense a threat. In our modern context, we don’t fight like a badger with a coyote, or run away like a rabbit from a fox. But our basic impulse to protect ourselves is automatic and unconscious.

How to Succeed as a Chief Growth Officer: Five ways to challenge status quo and encourage growth.

How to Succeed as a Chief Growth Officer: Five ways to challenge status quo and encourage growth. | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

Sanjay Khosla explains what CGOs must do to implement new growth strategies. The title “Chief Growth Officer” implies a fairly straightforward mandate. Whether by focusing resources, seeking untapped markets, or broadening a company’s sights, CGOs are there to discover new pathways to growth. “In today’s global, digital world, there’s suddenly this imperative to focus on growth at the highest possible level,” says Sanjay Khosla, a senior fellow in the Kellogg Markets and Customers Initiative and former President, Developing Markets of Kraft Foods. But how exactly does a CGO implement new growth strategies? Here are a few touchstones to consider.

Bettina Thompson's insight:

"...the CGO is free to challenge the status quo in order to discover new pathways to growth. But it also leads to a heightened sense of responsibility and purpose. “You always have to be listening, and thinking about what’s next,” Davis says. “And you have to make a very strong case.”

This speaks to me on a such an intuitive level.  This is an incredibly important role in today's arena.  Relevancy and sustainable growth are dependent on responsible timely disruption based on digital trends and the integration of social growth and impact.

As a creative and committed philanthropic being, the opportunity to be engaged at a time when the customer can be heard so clearly (via multiple platform and forums), and creativity is a must (think the rising power of video), is truly thrilling and energizing!

Why Being Constantly Busy Is Killing Your Creativity

Why Being Constantly Busy Is Killing Your Creativity | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

Maybe you've heard, being constantly busy is bad for your brain. "Many important mental processes seem to require what we call downtime and other forms of rest during the day," claims a Scientific American article rounding up the research on the subject. Doing nothing now and then is required to replenish motivation and attention, and to form stable memories, science shows.

It's also required for maximum creativity, according to new research.

Your cluttered mind is a creativity killer

The study comes out of Bar-Ilan University in Israel, where researchers Shira Baror and Moshe Bar asked a group of volunteers to complete a creativity-gauging word association task. For instance, if the researchers said "white," the participants were asked to name whatever related word first popped into their heads.

Now here's the twist. The participants had to do this while carrying various mental "loads." Some were simultaneously asked to remember a string of seven digits, while others had to commit only two to memory. How did their performance differ?

Authentic Leadership Rediscovered

Authentic Leadership Rediscovered | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

In the last 10 years, authenticity has become the gold standard of leadership. This is a sea change from 2003 when I wrote Authentic Leadership. Back then, many people asked what it meant to be authentic. Authentic Leadership was intended as a clarion call to the new generation to learn from negative examples like Enron, WorldCom and Tyco. In it, I defined authentic leaders as genuine, moral and character-based leaders: "People of the highest integrity, committed to building enduring organizations … who have a deep sense of purpose and are true to their core values who have the courage to build their companies to meet the needs of all their stakeholders, and who recognize the importance of their service to society."

6 Powerful Ways To Thank Your Team For Being Awesome | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

It sounds like common sense to say thank you to those who work for you and work with you, but it in reality this common sense wisdom is not practiced as much as it should be.

Some people say they don't have time or can't afford to show appreciation; others may have good intentions but just never think of it in the moment.

But if you think of it in terms of payoff--giving you and your organization more stability and less turnover (and, as a result, greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness)--it's about investing in an important relationship.

Can Women be Strong Leaders Without Being Labeled “Bossy”?

Can Women be Strong Leaders Without Being Labeled “Bossy”? | Life Sponge | Scoop.it
Attitudes and preconceptions about gender roles are deeply rooted.
Bettina Thompson's insight:

Do you agree with this statement?...

"The contradiction between needing to act as a strong leader and needing to be seen as warm and nonthreatening is a catch-22 for women. In order to get ahead, an executive must be seen as strong and competent, yet if a woman makes a point of seeming competent, she won’t be seen as warm and could face a backlash and not get promoted."

As a female leader, are you inclined to chime in and say, "The struggle is real!"?

OR

Do you think it is the job of today's female leaders to 'break the ceiling' in authenticity? Do you think women in leadership roles need to steel themselves against immediate perceptions and assert herself when necessary for the benefit of her longterm performance, her team and ultimately the organization?

Perhaps the answer, as with most answers, is a careful balance of the two....

5 Scientific Ways to Make Yourself Smarter

5 Scientific Ways to Make Yourself Smarter | Life Sponge | Scoop.it

About a decade ago, some early scientific research suggested that playing memory games could increase "fluid intelligence," which is the capacity to solve problems in novel situations, independent of acquired knowledge.

A spate of apps, books and classes resulted, all claiming to make people smarter. Unfortunately, later studies proved that "braintraining" (as it's sometimes called) has no effect on your general intelligence.

The most recent research in psychology and neuroscience, however, has found five effective strategies for improving your intelligence. Some of them may surprise you:
