On December 17th, 2020, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) virtually launched a joint report that examines the implication of food policies, mainly trade and government food subsidies, on evolving nutritional transitions and associated body weight outcomes across selected countries in the NENA region. These countries are projected to hit alarmingly new obesity and overweight records within the next few decades.

A devaluing local currency coupled with the scarcity of hard currencies has made production more expensive. Producers are turning to exports as a solution.
Lebanese olive oil production is expected to reach 26,000 tons in the 2020/21 crop year, according to the latest data from the International Olive Council. While this figure is not too much higher than the rolling five-year average (23,500 tons), a shift is beginning to take place in the sector.
The Coronavirus pandemic has revealed the fragility of our food systems, affecting all dimensions of food security and nutrition across the world. It has highlighted how deeply our world is interconnected and the importance of better recognising and understanding the interconnections that are intrinsic to these systems and their key role in pursuit of the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. There is now, more than ever, a stronger need for a “route change” towards a common action on food systems transformation.
The time has come for a transformation of Europe’s food systems. Small-scale food producers, peasants, community groups, environmental justice activists and others have been calling for years for a shift towards agriculture that nourishes communities, regenerates ecosystems, and provides decent and sustainable livelihoods. The concept of agroecology encompasses these ambitions, referring to the science, movement, and practice of working with nature to build food sovereignty. The climate crisis and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have only made it clearer how urgent such a transformation is.
The first phase of the Med-Gold project is approaching completion and the results could revolutionize how olive growers plan for the future. The four-year project funded by the European Union seeks to provide olive, grape and wheat growers with information that can be used to develop short, intermediate and long-term strategies to combat climate change and pests.

The news comes as Spain’s Food Information and Control Agency announced that production would be about 200,000 tons lower than initially estimated
Spanish bottled olive oil exports to the United States decreased by 80 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, according to Spain’s main agricultural cooperative, Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias.
Tariffs imposed in October 2019 by the Trump administration are blamed for the fall, which damaged the Spanish olive oil sector dramatically.

From charitable efforts to reversing desertification, olive trees and olive oil continue to play a fundamental role in Greek society.
Harvest challenges, prices and international and domestic markets tend to be the prevailing concerns in the Greek olive oil sector. However, there are plenty of other ways the olive tree plays a role in Greek society, outside of business boundaries. In Crete, the beneficiaries of the Heraklion social services program received free olive oil through a local grocery store.
