A team of researchers from Ohio’s Wright State University has discovered that the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is capable of completing development on olive trees, making it the second official non-ash species of plant that can host the insect. While EAB previously only posed a threat to forests and landscapes, this latest discovery reveals that it could have negative consequences for olive trees should an invasion occur.

Spain: Environmental and nutritional impacts of dietary changes during the COVID-19 lockdown | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

The COVID lockdown has affected food purchases and eating habits. In this regard, this short communication assesses the nutritional and environmental impacts of these changes during the COVID lockdown in Spain, by applying Life Cycle Assessment and an energy- and nutrient-corrected functional unit. Three environmental impacts were studied (Global Warming Potential, Blue Water Footprint and Land Use) and a total of seven weekly diet scenarios were designed: two pre-COVID diets for March and April in 2019 (MAR19, APR19), one COVID diet (COVID) and two alternative diets, one based on the National Dietary Guidelines (NDG) and another one on the Planetary Health Diet (PHD).

More than before, the region is facing unprecedented and interdependent environmental, economic and social challenges that affect food security, economic growth, production system and sustainability, and thus the livelihoods of all Mediterranean people.

The global health and economic emergency caused by Covid-19, the scarcity and irrational use of natural resources, climate change, urbanization phenomena and market globalization are among the main factors that have influenced the evolutionary processes of Mediterranean countries. These phenomena, albeit in a different way between the different countries, have provoked strong solicitation and changes in the agri-food production / processing patterns, as well as in the food consumption patterns and lifestyles in the Mediterranean region.

Olive grow­ers are cel­e­brat­ing ​“a sign of hope and rebirth” after har­vest­ing healthy olives from trees recently rein­tro­duced to the Xylella fas­tidiosa-rav­aged region of Puglia.
Farmers from Casarano, a com­mune located close to Lecce at the heel of Italy’s boot, have har­vested olives from their two-year-old trees belong­ing to the Favolosa cul­ti­var (or Fs-17).

The COVID-19 crisis is expected to lead to a 46.4 percent decline in Tunisia’s GDP during the 2nd quarter of 2020 (April to June). The industrial sector will be hit hardest, with output falling by 52.7 percent, followed closely by services (-49.0 percent) and agriculture (-16.2 percent). These high losses are a result of the complete lockdown imposed in the country to contain the pandemic.
