Mohammad Ali Neimeh's — better known as Abu Kassem — life revolves around Za’atar, Lebanon wild thyme plant. During the Israeli occupation of South Lebanon, he needed to change the way thyme was grown, out of fear he would be shot or shelled trying to get to his plants in the wild. The changes that he implemented have seen huge changes in the way that thyme is now grown in Lebanon. This is his story.

“Wake up before it’s too late.” Small farms are the only way to feed the world. “The time is now to switch back to our natural farming roots.” These are dire warnings from the U.N. in a 2015 report. Monocrops and GMOs are not the only answer and are not enough to feed the world. There must also be a supplemental food source to feed the planet. That food source is small farms. We have to grow our own food. This is something that farmers, ranchers, and homesteaders have known since the beginning of modern agriculture.

Farmers in the Northern parts of Uganda face many challenges in the sector. The lack of enough funding from the Government, recovery from the LRA war and harsh weather patterns aside, other serious constraints include: lack of access to relevant and timely agricultural information; the need for more skills empowerment initiatives such as agribusiness and entrepreneurial skills; and poor attitudes and mindsets that are dictated by patriarchal beliefs which strongly influence power dynamics in many settings including resource control and ownership, continue to hinder progress in the agricultural sector in this part of the country.
