Coronavirus and the Implications for Food Systems and Policy

Coronavirus and the Implications for Food Systems and Policy  | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Agrilinks, 12/03/2020 - Looking to past viruses as well as China’s handling of COVID-19 might help guide future responses in public policy and programming.

Although Ebola virus is a vastly different disease than COVID-19 — on the genetic level they work through different processes, they have different transmission pathways, there are differences in susceptibility, the disease progresses differently, and they have different levels of severity — it is perhaps useful to reflect upon the food system disruptions that occurred during the 2013—2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, primarily in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

Despite these observations, there is still much we don’t know about the particular disease dynamics of COVID-19 and the possible impacts of different policy decisions. Has Our Food Become Safer in the Last 10 Years?

Has Our Food Become Safer in the Last 10 Years? | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
Listeria in smoked salmon, pieces of metal in chicken strips, undeclared allergens in frozen Chinese food and meatballs, E.coli in ground beef, and mold in corn used for animal feed. This is a partial list of the foods recall in the U.S. from just the last few weeks. In our increasingly consolidated, industrialized food system, stories like these have become commonplace. And yet, unless they are associated with documented illnesses or deaths—such as last year’s two outbreaks of E. coli on Romaine lettuce in Yuma, Arizona, which led to hundreds of illnesses and at least five deaths—they rarely make front page news.

EUROPE: Can low-income households afford a healthy diet?

EUROPE: Can low-income households afford a healthy diet?  | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
In Europe, food insecurity is still a serious concern for individual and public health. Although progress has been made in reducing undernourishment, other types of malnutrition such as obesity and overweight are on the rise. Policies that aim at improving healthy eating and addressing food insecurity tend to focus on food aid, nutritional education and financial incentives. These policies are generally not targeted at the problem of insufficient income as a key barrier to access a healthy diet.

Equal Rights in Food: Eliminate legal discrimination against women to advance food security and nutrition
In societies where there is a high degree of gender inequality, there is also a significantly higher proportion of undernourishment among women and girls.

The issues of data ownership, privacy and security are becoming increasingly contentious due to the various complexities out of which they emerge. The rise of the Internet and the digital age have opened up a Pandora’s box of opportunities alongside challenges which affect our society. Data is one of these exciting opportunities. We have to allow and promote the gathering and exchange of data, which can then become knowledge that can be useful and contribute to better policy decision-making.
