In a year that marks the 25th Anniversary of the Barcelona Process, which laid the foundations for the creation of the UfM, its Member States are determined to monitor and assess the progress made in advancing gender equality in the region and update their related strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In line with the 2017 UfM Ministerial Declaration on strengthening the role of women in society, and following a 3-year regional process involving governments and gender experts, the UfM will adopt this month a regional intergovernmental follow-up mechanism on gender balance. This entails concrete indicators that will allow to monitor the progress made on women’s rights and to work collectively to accelerate women’s full participation in the region.

Climate Change Hits Vulnerable Communities First and Hardest | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Building resilience in fragile regions must be a priority, not an afterthought, in our efforts to reach global goals. Climate change impacts vulnerable communities hardest.

We’ve known for a while that conflict and political instability—especially when coupled with extreme weather events such as hurricanes or drought—inevitably leads to poverty, food insecurity, limited access to clean water and sanitation, unreliable infrastructure and displacement.

Malta: Pandemic shows us local is best, and farmers are rising to the challenge | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
COVID-19 reminds us how crucial farmers are in securing Malta’s fragile food supply. But will it be the wake-up call to farming from decline and concrete?

IFAD President calls on Member States

IFAD President calls on Member States | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), called on its 177 Member States to help the Fund reach its goal of doubling its impact on the lives of the world’s most marginalized people by 2030.
“With extreme weather, conflict, fragility and migration threatening our food systems, we need to invest more in the rural people who grow our food,” said Houngbo. “We have just 10 years to reach our global targets of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. That means stepping up our investments where poverty and hunger is concentrated – in rural areas.”
