AFRICA: Africa and the Covid-19 crisis: looking for more resilient food systems - FARM & Pluriagri

AFRICA: Africa and the Covid-19 crisis: looking for more resilient food systems - FARM & Pluriagri | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

The pandemic of Covid-19 has hit hard food value chains in Africa, through domestic and foreign trade effects on supply and demand. Its impact has been all the more important as this sector has long suffered from structural weaknesses that hamper its capacity to provide food security, expand, and create jobs. Hence the need to debate on which measures to take and which policies to implement in order to increase the resilience of food systems, in preparation for the shocks of different nature (economic, climatic, sanitary...) that may occur again in the future.

How we can use the COVID-19 disruption to improve food systems and address the climate emergency

How we can use the COVID-19 disruption to improve food systems and address the climate emergency | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
At first glance, the COVID-19 crisis appears to have nothing to do with the climate emergency. Over the last month, COVID-19 has eclipsed climate change and many other global challenges as the most pressing issue we face worldwide. Between learning to manage life on lockdown and monitoring the surreal charts depicting soaring numbers of infections and deaths across the globe, it can be difficult to find brain space for anything else.

EUROPE: Land for Agroecology

EUROPE: Land for Agroecology | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it
The time has come for a transformation of Europe’s food systems. Small-scale food producers, peasants, community groups, environmental justice activists and others have been calling for years for a shift towards agriculture that nourishes communities, regenerates ecosystems, and provides decent and sustainable livelihoods. The concept of agroecology encompasses these ambitions, referring to the science, movement, and practice of working with nature to build food sovereignty. The climate crisis and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have only made it clearer how urgent such a transformation is.
