The news comes as Spain’s Food Information and Control Agency announced that production would be about 200,000 tons lower than initially estimated

Spanish bottled olive oil exports to the United States decreased by 80 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, according to Spain’s main agricultural cooperative, Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias.

Tariffs imposed in October 2019 by the Trump administration are blamed for the fall, which damaged the Spanish olive oil sector dramatically.

This preliminary study describes the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on people’s interests, opinions, and behaviour towards food. Here, the evolution of people’s internet searches, the characteristics of the most watched YouTube videos, and Tweeted messages in relation to COVID-19 and food was studied. Additionally, an online questionnaire (Spanish population, n = 362) studied changes in food shopping habits during the lockdown, motivations behind the changes, and perceived reliability of the information received from media.

Lands devoted to organ­i­cally cul­ti­vated olive groves in Spain increased by nearly five per­cent in 2019, accord­ing to the lat­est analy­sis from the country’s Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture, Fish­eries and Food.
Over­all, organic agri­cul­tural sur­face area in the coun­try increased by 4.8 per­cent, allow­ing Spain to main­tain its posi­tion as the largest organic farm­ing nation in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.

With 184,948 coro­n­avirus cases and 19,315 deaths as of today, Spain is one of the worst-hit coun­tries by the pan­demic, only after the US and Italy in terms of the total num­ber of casu­al­ties. Since March 14, the Euro­pean coun­try has been under a state of alarm that has imposed a severe lock­down which will last until at least the 26th of April.
Spain’s excep­tional mea­sures mir­ror those imple­mented in other coun­tries around the globe. Most shops have been closed for over a month, as well as bars, restau­rants, schools and uni­ver­si­ties.

The COVID lockdown has affected food purchases and eating habits. In this regard, this short communication assesses the nutritional and environmental impacts of these changes during the COVID lockdown in Spain, by applying Life Cycle Assessment and an energy- and nutrient-corrected functional unit. Three environmental impacts were studied (Global Warming Potential, Blue Water Footprint and Land Use) and a total of seven weekly diet scenarios were designed: two pre-COVID diets for March and April in 2019 (MAR19, APR19), one COVID diet (COVID) and two alternative diets, one based on the National Dietary Guidelines (NDG) and another one on the Planetary Health Diet (PHD).
