Increasing economic affluence among Asia’s rapidly growing middle class has witnessed a strong demand for protein consumption in the region. A recent report by Asia Research and Engagement (ARE) states, “This global strategy to achieve food security acknowledges the significant increase in protein consumption with population growth and affluence.” However, the environmental impact of this dietary shift is significant, and the report highlights the negative externalities, too.

Many in eastern Nepal, however, particularly the Panchtar district, have experienced an unusual and prolonged drought that threatens both local agriculture and the Nepalese economy. Though dry conditions were once rare in eastern Nepal, the current drought has lingered for over a year, impacting agricultural production. Agriculture is also slowly being eroded around the country, as farmers abandon their plotsfor more lucrative overseas work, or to find work in rapidly expanding urban centres.
