Government to call for S$1.2b in new ICT tenders - Channel NewsAsia

Government to call for S$1.2b in new ICT tenders - Channel NewsAsia | Buzz IT | Scoop.it
Cybersecurity, infrastructure and data analytics among the tenders to be issued for the financial year of 2014 by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
STELnetwork #STEL's insight:

Did you know that the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has recently called for S$1.2 billion worth of government infocomm tenders for the fiscal year of 2014?  This clearly points to the fact that the IT industry is still growing and remains a prime investment choice!

This recent move also signals the Singapore government’s continued willingness to invest in IT infrastructure, thus ensuring that our country remains at the cutting edge of technology for many years to come.  It also points to the government’s willingness to respond to the changing needs of its citizens, and its move towards a more interactive relationship with its citizens: something perhaps best exemplified by the eCitizen Ideas portal, a website that crowd-sources for new ways that the nation can grow and improve.

Facebook's Psychological Experiments Connected to Department of Defense Research on Civil Unrest

Facebook's Psychological Experiments Connected to Department of Defense Research on Civil Unrest | Buzz IT | Scoop.it
It turns out that one of the researchers who ran Facebook's recent psychological experiments received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense to study the contagion of ideas
STELnetwork #STEL's insight:

Nearly 700,000 Facebook users found themselves unwittingly enlisted in a study that aimed to discover if a user’s news feed content could impact their moods and emotions.  By manipulating the order and percentage of items that appeared on a user’s newsfeed, Facebook found that showing users predominantly positive content would make them post more positive things, and the inverse is true if they were shown predominantly negative content.

While many academics discuss the ethical considerations of such an experiment, others have discovered a sinister side to this study.  It turns out that one of the chief researchers on the project was found to have received funding from the US’s Department of Defense research on civil unrest, and that this experiment may have simply been part of a larger project called the Minerva Initiative.

A chatty humanoid robot by the name of Pepper was also recently unveiled by Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank.  Capable of understanding feelings and emotions, Pepper is even able to analyse and participate in about 70-80 percent of spontaneous conversations!
