In "Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom," Iwata recounts time spent with predecessor Hiroshi Yamauchi, who told him, "If Nintendo tries to fight, it's gonna lose. Don't waste your energy on fighting." Iwata attributes that statement to the creation of the "Blue Ocean Strategy," where the company dedicated itself to creating an environment that reached a wide audience of traditional gamers and non-gamers alike. Yamauchi inspired Iwata to cultivate an environment of innovation, advising him to not "do anything that's been done before." Iwata took this wisdom and went on to work with his fellow employees like Shigeru Miyamoto on the Nintendo DS and Wii consoles, using the touch screen interface and motion controls to open the doors of gaming to people who may have never thought to pick up a controller.

Few semiconductor startups from Silicon Valley’s early days have survived as Integrated Device Manufacturers (IDMs). Intel is the only one that remains on the leading edge. While other spin-offs in the valley were emulating the giants in the southwest, Motorola and Texas Instruments, Moore would, with the help of others lay down a series of overlapping strategies for its success that are still in play today. Having a corporate venture capital arm allows companies to utilize a small portion of cash on their balance sheets to make strategic investments in companies, allowing the CVCs to test out innovative ideas and leverage external talent. This is especially great for ideas which the company can’t develop in-house due to resource constraints or for technologies that can be more efficiently developed by others.

While there are many great examples of corporate venture capital groups, there are also some corporations who really haven’t mastered the game of Venture Capital yet. These companies might invest in one or two startups, but don’t have a well thought out investment strategy.
