Boise State Visits Belize Zoo

Boise State Visits Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it
Boise State University, which has 'The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw' as it's campus read for 2012 -2013, got to visit the Belize Zoo. Looks like they had a great time seeing the zoo, which, along with Sharon Matola, is a big part of the book.

"Although the Zoo was closed to the public, Sharon and her staff graciously opened the zoo for our group and provided a guided tour which included many behind the scenes areas. Below are a few photos of our memorable visit to the Belize Zoo. Our Pat the Great Cat team presented Sharon their education trail materials they prepared for the community fair"

Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw on Boise State's Read List

Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw on Boise State's Read List | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Boise State University has chosen 'The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw' to be their campus read for this year.  Sharon Matola, creator and curator of the Belize Zoo will be visiting BSU's campus next month.  Bruce Barcott, the author, will visit the campus next year.

"It is known as 'The Best Little Zoo in the World' because of the impact it has had in bringing about awareness of the biodiversity in Belize.  As the story goes, Matola is a true eccentric, riding around on a motorcycle and keeping a three-legged jaguar as a pet.  But when a web of corporations, CEOs, banks and bureaucrats conspire to purchase, dam and destroy one of the great rivers of Central America — and one of the final habitats of the scarlet macaw — she bands together a ragtag army of local villagers and starts a campaign to save the remaining birds.  Her dramatic struggle brings alive the worldwide battle over globalization, demand for energy, environmental destruction, the fate of the planet’s species, and the realities of economic survival in a tiny Third World country."

Sharon Matola Speaks at Boise State University

Sharon Matola Speaks at Boise State University | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Sharon Matola, manager of the Belize Zoo, spoke Tuesday at Boise State University, which has made their campus read the book, “The Last Flight of the Scarlett Macaw: One Woman’s Fight to Save the World’s Most Beautiful Bird.”  Sounds like it went well.

"Before she gave her speech, Matola ate dinner with a few students and faculty, including ASBSU President Ryan Gregg.  'When you talk to Sharon you really realize that she’s a person who is very thoughtful and she really cares about what you’re saying,' Gregg said. 'You can tell that she cares a lot about the things that she wrote about, and that she continues to write about. You can tell that she cares about the Belize Zoo a lot, and about the Macaw population.'  During the question-answer session with the Honors College, students asked question and discussed many issues with Matola.  'It was cool to see how passionate she is about animals,' said freshman Shelby Butts. 'She seems like a very genuine person and it was interesting to find out that she actually has not read the final copy of the book.'"
