The bright side: Lessons you learn from being injured

The bright side: Lessons you learn from being injured | Athletes Always Win, ON or OFF the court. | Scoop.it
Injuries are a pain both literally and figuratively, but the lessons that you learn while you’re sidelined can make you a much better runner.

Via Leonidas Athanasopoulos
Kara Kentner's insight:

I think there is a lot to say for injuries... good and bad! Not many people realize how much stronger you become after an injury. Although, there are a lot of negatives; such as not being able to perform, there are many things you learn to take for granted.

This is another attribute that former-athletes bring to the work world.

Leonidas Athanasopoulos's curator insight, June 23, 2015 6:30 AM

When we do no listen to our bodies, injuries sometimes are what keeps us healthy.

Maura Bilek's comment, July 2, 2015 7:14 PM
This is such a great topic you've picked, and this scoop shows important insight about it. Injuries are a common setback in being an athlete, but it's important to take that time to heal. You can still be a team player on or off the bench.
Kara Kentner's comment, July 5, 2015 6:24 PM
Yes! I agree Maura, not only that but when you come back, you realize how special and important your role is in the court.

A new study shows why high school athletes have greater career success.
Kara Kentner's insight:

"The new study led by Cornell University professor Kevin Kniffin, shows that former athletes are perceived differently by employers, projecting more self-confidence, more self-respect and more leadership skills than those who may have had extracurriculars in high school and college but were not involved heavily in sports."

Joe Kasper's comment, June 21, 2015 9:37 PM
This is good to know since I played sports in high school! I definitely agree that sports do boost your self confidence and leadership skills. I'll have to mention this at my next job interview.
Kara Kentner's comment, July 2, 2015 8:49 AM
I always mention it in my interviews and on my resumes. Not only will other people assume that you have organization, hard work, or determination... but if they are a sports fan themselves, then you are a shoe-in!

Why Athletes Often Make Great Employees

With the World Cup in full swing, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to talk about why athletes could potentially make great employees. I was an athlete for nearly 20 years of my life, playing soccer at some of the highest levels of competition that exists. As a competitive athlete, you experience hardship and learn about top qualities like leadership, teamwork, dedication and determination. Athletes fight both individually and alongside their teammates to end the match as the winner, and they’re determined to be the best, and beat the best. So, why hire an athlete? An athlete has al
Kara Kentner's insight:

These are all great reasons why athletes succeed in the workplace.

Stella N's comment, July 1, 2015 11:37 AM
Kara, I must say this is a topic I never really thought much about until looking at your ScoopIt page. This article is very accurate, particularly the part about teamwork, which is something I see mentioned on every single job posting. There weren't many sports programs where I grew up so I never experienced that, but I've always thought of joining some kind or recreational adult team. As this article says, there's clearly a lot of benefits.
Kara Kentner's comment, July 2, 2015 8:52 AM
Yes, even though I have been focusing on more competitive and professional sports, joining and adult league can still provide many benefits... in fact, I play in a few adult volleyball leagues as several different park districts and they are challenging! I learn many things I might not have learned playing at such a competitive level. Patience is a big one!

When do you start being a "former athlete," when you stop competing or you stop participating?
Kara Kentner's comment, June 26, 2015 1:36 PM
This is one of those things where there are multiple opinions. I would say when you stop competing at a high level. For example; college or the minor league.
