ELBOW is a portable cassette player reduced to the core. In XXI century, the rise of cheap and convenient digital media has made all physical formats „outdated“. Still, the tactile intimacy of physical formats is dearly missed. That’s the reason behind the resurgence of vinyl, and also motivation behind ELBOW. ELBOW was conceived with burning passion by, and for, cassette tape lovers!
ELBOW’s most prominent feature is the biaxial arm. It rotates in two directions – upward motion enables the insertion of a cassette, while sideways motion allows to manually switch playing direction. Playback is controlled by a single wheel – turning left from the initial position activates the motor and increases volume, turning in the opposite direction fast-forwards the cassette. The device has two connections: a standard 3.5mm audio plug, and a mini-USB port for charging and transferring audio to a computer. Also, an additional pin can be used to attach player to clothes and other objects, turning your cassette into a unique accessory.
Take part in the imminent cassette tape revival - help our research by answering a few simple questions!
A cool idea here and a beautiful design for this portable cassette tape player. This support become popular again in the experimental music world, so hope this company will have success to finalize this with a low price.
The 'Big Hex Machine' is a giant, yet simple, 16-bit computer specifically designed to explain how a computer works. Its instruction set requires a very small compiler, but it is powerful enough to implement useful programs.
The giant machine, based in the Merchant Venturers School of Engineering, measures over eight square meters. It is built out of over 100 specially designed four-bit circuit boards, which enables students to be taught about fundamental principles of computer architecture from just a few basic components.
It was designed, and built, by students and staff at the University of Bristol's Computer Science Department.
Back in the old days hardware manufacturers felt safe in the knowledge that no mere hardware hacker could attempt to recreate their inventions. From Sony to Philips to LG to Samsung, the consumer electronics industry was locked up and no one could crack the case. Until those meddling Arduino kids came along…
Now anyone can make cool hardware and, thanks to Arduino, it is easier than ever to connect your devices to the Internet and take in data from the outside world. The ESLOV IoT Invention Kit is an official Arduino product that adds Internet of Things capabilities to your hardware products...
"Hacking the brain is both challenging as well as doable, both philosophical as well as practical, both artistic as well as business, both scientific as well as futuristic.”
This is the century to unravel the working mechanisms of our mysterious brains. Brain cells and structures as well as live neuronal activity and –connections can be visualised with techniques such as EEG, fMRI, and PET. While neuronal activity can be influenced by techniques like transcranial- and deep brain stimulation.
There is an increasing market for consumer brain-imaging devices. Open the papers or the tv-guide, browse through forums and podcasts: everybody is talking about the brain – how it works, how it develops, how we use it and how we can use it better. With our hackathons we invite anyone – from the most experienced bio-hacker to the curious neuroscientist and the hardcore programmer to the eccentric artist – to tackle their own brainy ideas.

It was the low-tech, easy-to-use film format beloved of budding auteurs and cinema-obsessed visual artists, but Super 8 died a death in 1982, when Kodak stopped making the camera units after the rise of video. Now, however, Kodak has announced it will issue a new version of the Super 8 camera, half a century after it was first launched in 1965...

Additive Manufacturing of Optically Transparent Glass developed by the Mediated Matter Group at the MIT Media Lab in collaboration with the Glass Lab at MIT.
Ancient yet modern, enclosing yet invisible, glass was first created in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt 4,500 years ago. Precise recipes for its production - the chemistry and techniques - often remain closely guarded secrets. Glass can be molded, formed, blown, plated or sintered; its formal qualities are closely tied to techniques used for its formation.
From the discovery of core-forming process for bead-making in ancient Egypt, through the invention of the metal blow pipe during Roman times, to the modern industrial Pilkington process for making large-scale flat glass; each new breakthrough in glass technology occurred as a result of prolonged experimentation and ingenuity, and has given rise to a new universe of possibilities for uses of the material. ...
Canon dropped a bombshell this morning by announcing the new Canon ME20F-SH, a multi-purpose camera that has a maximum ISO of over 4,000,000. That’s right: this camera can basically see in the dark.
Canon says the sensor in the camera allows it to shoot Full HD video while subjects are illuminated with less than 0.0005 lux. To put that in perspective, full moon on a clear night is about 0.27 to 1.0 lux, and 0.0001 lux is a moonless, overcast night. The camera can capture high-quality images of things the human eye cannot see...
You need a big sub-woofer for big bass, right? Wrong. After 10 years of research, French acoustic engineers as Devialet just unveiled a giant step forward in audio that’s just one foot long. The Phantom is a petite, spherical, all-in-one amplifier and speaker that delivers what audiophiles think may be the best sound in the world for around $2,000.
Of course, $2,000 is pretty steep, and that’s just for one of these things. But it’s about the same as a 5.1 stereo system from Sonos or a traditional set of hi-fi speakers, sub and amp.

In close collaboration with international artists and in hands-on courses for students of the associated universities, prototypes of new musical instruments are developed. The emerging designs are evaluated regarding their versatility and expressiveness in artistic practice.
Build a piano out of vegetables or create a keyboard from foil. Connect anything conductive to Ototo using alligator clips and turn your touch into sound!
Ototo is designed by Dentaku from our London studio. Ototo means 'little brother' in Japanese - so we think of it as a perfect pocket-sized companion.
The concept was realised by Yuri Suzuki and Mark McKeague under commission from Near Now. In October 2013 we ran an invention workshop with the first prototype boards at Game City in Nottingham and announced the project to the public. Over the following months we ran public and student workshops testing out Ototo, getting feedback and refining our design.
In February 2014, Dentaku ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund the first production project. The project was successfully funded, raising £73,589 from 915 backers.
Now we sell Ototo to makers and creators all over the world who want to make their own musical dreams come true.
OpenDrop is a new design for an open source digital microfludics platform for research purposes. The device uses recent electro-wetting technology to control small droplets of liquids. Potential applications are lab on a chip devices for automating processes of digital biology. How ever the present design should also open the technology to other field and allow experimentation to find new applications. Including the field of art, music, games and education.
The design approach chosen relies strongly on Do-It-Your-Self (DIY) and Low-Cost. To aim is to only use standard and widely-available components, materials, and production processes. We try to avoid parts that aren’t available to individual customers or processes that require expensive setup costs. Also all design files and software required to operate your hardware are shared under open licenses.
We looked for tiny, autonomous, easy to connect to, and 9 Degrees of Freedom IMU, but none of the available wireless motion sensors were affordable enough to really unlock creativity, so we built one. In a few points, here are the specs:
9 DoF with on-board sensor fusion (more explanation below)
Easy to connect with BLE: good for computer + smartphone + tablet connection possible (lower power than WiFi)
Compact & autonomous: Embeds a CR2032 battery holder (available in any corner shops, gas stations…)
With the Structure Sensor, the future is in your hands. Rapid 3D scanning of objects and people, 3D maps of interior spaces, and mixed reality experiences where fantasy becomes impossible to tell from reality.
SensorTape is a modular and dense sensor network in a form factor of a tape. It enables intuitive deployment of sensor arrays, as SensorTape is modular, it can be cut and joined in an arbitrary order.
SensorTape is just a research prototype at this point, but we may explore turning it into a product in the near future. Please enter your information in the form below

Orbbec Persee is the world’s first 3D camera-computer. It is a versatile, low-cost device that can fit in the palm of your hand. It can plug into your TV or run without a display, and you can interact with it entirely through the built-in 3D camera.
We want artists, hackers, creative coders, and pioneering developers to use Persee, give us feedback, and make 3D experiences that take intelligent computing to the next level.
We’re ready to start mass producing our devices and we’re looking for Indiegogo supporters to back our campaign to raise the funds we need to bring Persee to the world.
