The Changing Role of the Enterprise Architect

In a wellestablished enterprise architecture practice there are core, applied and implicit enterprise architects, and enterprise architecture is a general management discipline practiced across boundaries by enterprising people with dialectic and dialogic skills."


"The more successful enterprise architecture becomes in adding value to the enterprise, the more invisible it becomes; we can call it enterprise architecture by stealth, where enterprise architecture is done ‘everywhere’ in the enterprise ...  Enterprise architecture is especially helpful in highly complex transformations ...and can be crucial to transforming enterprises, because it is essential for an enterprise to have an integrated and coherent approach to its strategies, business and technologies, and that is exactly what enterprise architecture is all about. Enterprise architecture is often considered a transformational effort dealing with change, but as laudable as that might be, this, in fact, falls well short of enterprise architecture’s full potential. If we only ever do enterprise architecture as part of a transformation project, how can enterprise architecture ever tell us what transformation to make? Therefore, enterprise architecture must become pervasive and regularized, and continuously be tied to on-going strategic planning and corporate governance."

"A fundamental assumption of the DSDM approach is that nothing is built perfectly first time, but that as a rule of thumb 80% of the value of the solution can be delivered for 20% of the effort that it would take to produce the total solution (Pareto’s Principle)."

"In DSDM, the iterative approach encourages detail to emerge over time; therefore, the current step needs to be completed in only enough detail to allow the project to move to the next step with any shortfall in detailed understanding being dealt with in a subsequent iteration of development."

"DSDM requires basic foundations for the project to be agreed at an early stage. This allows businesses to understand the scope and fundamental characteristics of the proposed solution, and the way it will be created, before development starts. Clarifying and agreeing the foundations for the project from the combined perspectives of business, solution and management reduces the likelihood of nasty surprises on DSDM projects. In particular, for larger corporate organisations or organisations with a complex architecture and/or governance standards, agreeing the foundations early in the project is essential."

"DSDM has a broader focus than most other Agile approaches in that it deals with projects rather than just the development and delivery of a product (typically software). Reference models or architectures provide a common vocabulary, reusable designs and industry best practices. They are not solution architectures, i.e. they are not implemented directly. Rather, they are used as a constraint for more concrete architectures.
