Apple Execs Chose to Keep a Hack of 128 Million iPhones Quiet | #CyberSecurity  | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

IN SEPTEMBER 2015, Apple managers had a dilemma on their hands: Should or should they not notify 128 million iPhone users of what remains the worst mass iOS compromise on record? Ultimately, all evidence shows, they chose to keep quiet.

This story originally appeared on Ars Technica, a trusted source for technology news, tech policy analysis, reviews, and more. Ars is owned by WIRED's parent company, Condé Nast.

The mass hack first came to light when researchers uncovered 40 malicious App Store apps, a number that mushroomed to 4,000 as more researchers poked around. The apps contained code that made iPhones and iPads part of a botnet that stole potentially sensitive user information.

17,000 Macs hit by malware botnet, with help from Reddit

17,000 Macs hit by malware botnet, with help from Reddit | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
Security researchers believe that they have uncovered a new botnet, which has recruited thousands of Mac computers.

According to their report, the sophisticated malware – which they have dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm – has infected more than 17,000 computers running OS X.

Computers that have been hijacked could have information stolen from them, further malware planted upon them, or be used to spread more malware or launch spam campaigns and denial-of-service attacks.

Java-based malware driving DDoS botnet infects Windows, Mac, Linux devices

Java-based malware driving DDoS botnet infects Windows, Mac, Linux devices | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it
Multi-platform threat exploits old Java flaw, gains persistence.

Researchers have uncovered a piece of botnet malware that is capable of infecting computers running Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux that have Oracle's Java software framework installed.

The cross-platform HEUR:Backdoor.Java.Agent.a, as reported in a blog post published Tuesday by Kaspersky Lab, takes hold of computers by exploiting CVE-2013-2465, a critical Java vulnerability that Oracle patched in June. The security bug is present on Java 7 u21 and earlier. Once the bot has infected a computer, it copies itself to the autostart directory of its respective platform to ensure it runs whenever the machine is turned on.

Compromised computers then report to an Internet relay chat channel that acts as a command and control server.

Oxford Muses on Mac Flashback: Worst Outbreak Since Blaster

So how bad was last month's Mac Flashback outbreak and who suffered the most? Our guess: it was bad, and university IT help desks.

And it looks like our guess might not be far off the mark.

===> Oxford University Computing Services' network security team (aka OxCERT) has written that they dealt "with what is probably the biggest outbreak since Blaster struck the Windows world all the way back in the summer of 2003." <===

OxCERT dealt with around 1000 incidents for Blaster. They've seen several hundred Flashback incidents… "and they keep on coming."

Virus: les Macs ont perdu leur innocence

Virus: les Macs ont perdu leur innocence | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

Dr. Web's count of Macs actively infected with Flashback over time. The "A" marks Apple's release of its Flashback removal tool, and the "B" marks Dr. Web's discovery of another variant of Flashback that led to an increase in its infection count.

===> Flashback has been used for click fraud, as detailed by Symantec’s researchers. The malware redirected traffic from Google search ads to its own pay-per-click ads, generating as much as $10,000 a day. <===

Even with its command and control servers disabled, the infected machines continue to engage in that traffic-hijacking. And with nearly half a million users still infected, Flashback’s authors are still likely profiting from their scheme.

Bad Apples: Mac Malware through the Years

Bad Apples: Mac Malware through the Years | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

With the recent glut of high profile Mac-based malware like MacDefender and Flashback, it’s easy to forget that Macintosh computers (and Mac malware) have been kicking around for more than thirty years – longer, even, than Windows malware.

In fact, the first documented Mac virus actually predated some of the first PC viruses by a good four years. While conventional wisdom has always assumed that Macs are inherently safer than PCs, wider adoption of Macs in recent years has given rise to new and more sophisticated threats, with many suggesting that Apple’s honeymoon with malware authors may be over.

As this slideshow of Mac Malware through the years shows, however, Apple machines are no strangers to malicious software.

Apple “ten years behind Microsoft” in malware readiness

Apple “ten years behind Microsoft” in malware readiness | Apple, Mac, MacOS, iOS4, iPad, iPhone and (in)security... | Scoop.it

Apple is a decade behind Microsoft in terms of Mac malware security, research firm Kaspersky has contentiously suggested, something it predicts the Cupertino firm will quickly realize in a fast-approaching storm of rogue software.

“I think they are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security” company CEO Eugene Kaspersky told Computer Business Review at a security event this week, predicting a torrent of malware is incoming for OS X and that Apple will have to pull its boots up in order to handle it.
