WestJet Will Go Private in $5 Billion Deal: Business Travel News

Private equity firm Onex Corp. has agreed to acquire WestJet for $5 billion. Onex would acquire all outstanding WestJet shares at $31 per share, leaving the airline operating as a private company. WestJet shareholders will vote on the deal at a special meeting in July. WestJet board members unanimously recommended that shareholders vote for the transaction.

After ranking as Certify's most-expensed brand for North American businesses in 2018, Uber maintained the top spot during the first quarter of 2019, according to the expense management provider's latest SpendSmart report. Uber transactions comprised 11 percent of all expenses reported to Certify last year, and that share ticked up to 12 percent of Certify's 10 million receipts during the first quarter of 2019.

United Airlines wants to fly to South Africa

United Airlines today announced that it would like to fly nonstop between New York-Newark and Cape Town, South Africa beginning in December 2019.
The carrier says that it would like to serve the nonstop route three times weekly using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jet, pending approval from the US Department of Transportation. This would be the only nonstop flight between the U.S. and Cape Town. From the U.S., Delta and South African Airways fly nonstop to Johannesburg only.

Earlier this year, Sixt rolled out connected cars in Germany for rental on its mobility platform. The connected car "enables you to locate [it] by your mobile phone, to reserve it, walk up to it, open it, drive it and manage the whole billing cycle with your phone," Sixt senior director of North America and Europe Stuart Donnelly said at BTN Group's recent Minneapolis Business Travel Trends & Forecasts conference.

JetBlue to Start Transatlantic Service in 2021: Business Travel News

JetBlue will begin its first transatlantic service with flights to London from both New York and Boston in 2021. The flights will be on Airbus A321LR single-aisle aircraft with "a reimagined version" of JetBlue's premium Mint product. JetBlue has not yet determined which London airport it will serve.

Lufthansa Group is making a nonbinding offer to acquire Thomas Cook's German airline, Condor, the airline group announced. The offer also includes an option to buy Thomas Cook's other airlines, though according to Reuters, CEO Carsten Spohr said it's unlikely any single airline group could acquire all the company's airlines, due to antitrust regulations.

Travel Leaders expects more TMCs to join in the coming months. Uber IPO Prospectus Warns of Continuing Losses: Business Travel News

Uber has filed the prospectus for its upcoming IPO, reporting $11.3 billion in revenue and 91 million active users in 2018. Ridehailing revenue accounted for $9.2 billion of that and has more than doubled since 2016's $3.5 billion. Uber's expenses have grown at a similar rate, with operating losses of at least $3 billion for each of the last three years, according to the prospectus.
