Marriott's Plans for Data Protection: Business Travel News

In testimony to a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee, Marriott president and CEO Arne Sorenson laid out potential changes to its cybersecurity protocols and apologized for the breach of Starwood's reservation system. Are they enough? Sorenson said Marriott is working through how best to maintain travelers' information. "Part of our strategy going forward is to rely on encryption and tokenization to say, 'Whatever data we keep in this space, for example, it should all be encrypted.' That, by itself, is not necessarily a totally adequate defense, but it is one of the tools we should use." Thomas Jackson, chair of law firm Phillips Nizer's technology practice group, told BTN he worries that Marriott does not have a clear plan to prevent future breaches.

In late February, two California lawmakers, each with the support of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, introduced bills to strengthen individuals' data privacy. State California Assemblymember Marc Levine introduced a bill that would require businesses to notify consumers of compromised passport numbers and biometric information. California requires businesses that own, license or maintain personal information to disclose to California residents if their personal information is accessed without authorization or is reasonably believed to have been accessed.

Travel Policies Should Prepare for Premium Economy Expansion: Business Travel News

As both scope of and demand for premium class air travel rise this year, travel buyers increasingly will need to tweak premium class travel policies to reflect the choices presented to their travelers. In its 2019 Air Monitor, American Express Global Business Travel projects that demand for premium class travel will grow this year faster than airlines are adding premium capacity, which will lead to "strong fare increases to come across regional, transpacific and transatlantic routes." Late last year, several carriers already began adding surcharges to business class fares, according to the monitor.

Domestic Air Travel Grew Faster Than Crossborder Demand in January: Business Travel News

Global air traffic rose 6.5 percent year over year in January, and capacity grew 6.4 percent, according to the International Air Traffic Association. Load factor inched up 0.1 percentage points to 79.6 percent. Crossborder traffic rose 6 percent while crossborder capacity rose 5.8 percent, and load factor rose 0.2 percentage points to 79.8 percent.

Alaska Airlines has rolled out its basic economy Saver fare across its full network and expects it to drive a minimum of $100 million in revenue this year, executives said on a fourth-quarter earnings call. Alaska began testing the fare in November. It does not allow seat selection, changes or cancellations and puts the traveler in the last boarding group but does allow mileage accrual and carry-on luggage.
