Abstract


This paper reports on the initial stage of a design-based research program that aims to devise student-facing social learning analytics in a postsecondary setting. In order to foster student discussion in online classes, we devised an analytics toolkit that turns discussion forum data into information for students to reflect upon. The first pilot study conducted in an online course showed both early promises and challenges with this effort. In particular, students reported usefulness of the toolkit for monitoring posting behaviors and setting participation goals. Content analysis of post content linked tool usage with students' increased attempts to solicit peer responses to their posts and increased reflection on individual participation. However, the tool was not found useful or easy to use by some students, and it did not show benefits in other aspects of online discussion, such as crafting stronger argumentation or reflecting on group processes. These findings highlight the need of social learning analytics to strive for tool simplicity, scaffold students' development in data literacy, and bring analytics and pedagogical designs into close coordination.

Without a personalized touch, educators would otherwise stick to the traditional model of teaching and tailor instruction not to the individual, but to a mass classroom filled with supposedly homogenous mental make-ups. Project Inspire – the learning analytics solution by Moodle HQ, is a part of Moodle core since the release of Moodle 3.4. Learning Analytics project, similar to its parent Moodle, is also an open source, transparent next-generation learning analytics that go beyond simple descriptive analytics to offer predictions of learner success.

Learning Analytics project started in July 2016 as Project Inspire and after project scoping, initial indicators and coding landed as a Moodle plugin for Moodle 3.3. Recently, Learning Analytics becomes a part of Moodle core with the release of Moodle 3.4.

In this paper, the authors address learning analytics and the ways academic libraries are beginning to participate in wider institutional learning analytics initiatives. Since there are moral issues associated with learning analytics, the authors consider how data mining practices run counter to ethical principles in the American Library Association’s “Code of Ethics.” Specifically, the authors address how learning analytics implicates professional commitments to promote intellectual freedom; protect patron privacy and confidentiality; and balance intellectual property interests between library users, their institution, and content creators and vendors. The authors recommend that librarians should embed their ethical positions in technological designs, practices, and governance mechanisms.

Code of practice for learning analytics

Learning analytics uses data about students and their activities to help institutions understand and improve educational processes, and provide better support to learners.

Learning analytics should be used for the benefit of students. This might be to assist them individually or through using aggregated and anonymised data to help other students. Learning analytics might also be used to improve the educational experience more generally. It is distinct from assessment, and should be used for formative rather than summative purposes.

The International Association for Smart Learning Environments (IASLE: http://www.iasle.net/) provides a broad interpretation of what a smart learning environment is. In particular, IASLE states that a learning environment can be considered smart when various innovative features and attributes like adaptation, flexibility, thoughtfulness and so on are associated with the system (Spector, 2014). In a general sense, a smart learning can be described as a learning process characterized from effectiveness, efficient and engaging for a wide variety of learners with different levels of prior knowledge (adaptation affordances). Smart learning is enabled by technologies that rely on sensors, big data, open data, new ways of connectivity and exchange of information (e.g., Internet of Things, RFIDs); those integrated environments belong on the broad sense of smart learning environments. Like any other type of learning environments, video-based learning environments need to follow the same principles, and while video-based learning environments are becoming more flexible, thoughtful and adaptive (e.g., Khan Academy, Udacity) as well as several new such environments that incorporate “smart behavior” are created (e.g., Adaptemy, Dreambox, SmartSparrow); there is a lack of empirical analytics-based research on what ingredients of smart behavior can indeed increase effectiveness, efficiency and engagement. There is therefore a need to conduct empirically-driven research in the area of Smart Learning Analytics.

Moodle 3.4 is giving you access to a dark box that, over time, is supposed to become better at predicting the future. Today, the forecast is binary: the student will either complete the course or drop out before it ends. You will be able to view the sources the box is using to make the predictions and you can play around with them to test the performance and efficiency of the box.

But there is one caveat: The darkness of the box is subjective. The box is, in fact, transparent. Inside the box there are several algorithms that take raw data and process it, sometimes taking the processed data and plugging it back in once again (fun fact: that is called “Backpropagation.”) These algorithms are sometimes labeled “machine learning,” “neural networks,” or “TensorFlow,” which in most cases explain the obscurity of the box. But you can always learn what they mean and poke into the box’s inner mechanisms. This is, in fact, what this box encourages you to do. (Not that it is aware… yet.)

A post in moodle.com explains Moodle Learning Analytics, the Moodle HQ project in charge of the embedded analytics engine that all users will enjoy starting in Moodle 3.4. As the importance of data becomes universally recognized, Moodle and other open systems are starting to provide users the tools to capitalize on their own information and extract value from it without intermediaries.

A new Analytics section in Moodle’s Site administration page gives access to general analytics settings, as well as the models shipped in for analysis. Currently, the only setting is the choice of the engine: the “PHP machine learning backend,” which comes as default, or the Python version, which is considered more powerful and provides graphical results, but requires the Python language installed on the server.
