There was a time when Karen Duffy and her family did not know a single person
living with ALS. Their only connection to the disease (commonly referred to
as “Lou Gehrig’s) was a NBC television spot that featured special education
teacher and “warrior poet”, Jonathan Blais, as he competed in the 2005 World Ironman
At the time, Duffy’s then 12 year old son Brian, a triathlete himself, was powerfully
moved by Blais’ story. In the days and weeks that followed, the young man worked
to convince his mother that the family needed to “do something” to help the cause of
ALS. Eventually, the busy mother of two relented and Brian took up a letter writing
campaign that earned some $2,000. Reflecting on that time, Karen advises people to "listen to your kids"help them act upon their dreams. If something touches your heart, do something about it.
