Massive open online courses can be as effective to help students learn as face-to-face classes — and the learning outcomes will be equivalent whether or not they're academically prepared for the class or whether they perform well or poorly on a pretest.

Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.

Comparing Effectiveness of Learning in MOOCs and Classrooms

Comparing Effectiveness of Learning in MOOCs and Classrooms | All about (M)OOC & OER | Scoop.it

"The MIT RELATE (Research in Learning, Assessing and Tutoring Effectively) group has released a study comparing learning gains in the MITx Mechanics Review physics course with students in residential classrooms. According to the study, MOOC students learned a bit more than students in a traditional university course, but less than students taught with an interactive engagement pedagogy (as would typically be exemplified by a blended learning pedagogy integrating technology with in-person instruction). The study looked at learning gains across a diverse range of students, and found that learning occurs at all levels, including the extremes. Students with minimal background in mathematics and physics learned approximately as well as normal students, who in turn learned about as well as high school physics teachers filling gaps in their knowledge."

What Drives a Successful MOOC? An Empirical Examination of Criteria to Assure Design Quality of MOOCs

What Drives a Successful MOOC? An Empirical Examination of Criteria to Assure Design Quality of MOOCs | All about (M)OOC & OER | Scoop.it

This study is a first step towards identifying specific criteria that need to be considered when designing and implementing MOOCs. The results of this empirical study are based on a large survey targeting learners as well as professors, both with MOOC experience. As a result, we identified and rated 74 indicators classified into our two main dimensions of pedagogical and technological criteria distributed over six categories. From these, the learning analytics and assessment categories were found to be the key features for effective MOOCs.

Four Types of MOOC Research: From Fishing in the Exhaust to Design Research in the Core | LWMOOC

Four Types of MOOC Research: From Fishing in the Exhaust to Design Research in the Core | LWMOOC | All about (M)OOC & OER | Scoop.it

To draw attention to these design considerations, in this presentation I will present a taxonomy of four kinds of MOOC research:

• fishing in the exhaust: post-hoc analyses of courses designed and taught without any particular research agenda, yielding descriptive, observational insights

• experiments in the periphery: A/B type experiments of particular pedagogical approaches that test domain-independent teaching strategies (e.g. commitment devices, priming experiments, or motivational messages) that can be conducted

• observations in the field: qualitative research from interviews and observations that seeks to investigate the contexts in which MOOC students learn and the ways in which they make meaning of their experiences

• design research in the core: design research conducted in partnership with course faculty, instructional designers, and learning scientists to investigate pedagogical questions that attend to core issues in the design of a learning environment (e.g. the effect of using block-based programming languages in introductory computer science courses).
