Scientists Use GPT-AI to Read People's Thoughts in Breakthrough Achievement

Scientists Use GPT-AI to Read People's Thoughts in Breakthrough Achievement | AI Singularity | Scoop.it

Scientists have invented a language decoder that can translate a person’s thoughts into text using an artificial intelligence (AI) transformer similar to ChatGPT, reports a new study.

The breakthrough marks the first time that continuous language has been non-invasively reconstructed from human brain activities, which are read through a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine. The decoder was able to interpret the gist of stories that human subjects watched or listened to—or even simply imagined—using fMRI brain patterns, an achievement that essentially allows it to read peoples’ minds with unprecedented efficacy. While this technology is still in its early stages, scientists hope it might one day help people with neurological conditions that affect speech to clearly communicate with the outside world.

However, the team that made the decoder also warned that brain-reading platforms could eventually have nefarious applications, including as a means of surveillance for governments and employers. Though the researchers emphasized that their decoder requires the cooperation of human subjects to work, they argued that “brain–computer interfaces should respect mental privacy,” according to a study published on Monday in Nature Neuroscience.

“Currently, language-decoding is done using implanted devices that require neurosurgery, and our study is the first to decode continuous language, meaning more than full words or sentences, from non-invasive brain recordings, which we collect using functional MRI,” said Jerry Tang, a graduate student in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin who led the study, in a press briefing held last Thursday.

“The goal of language-decoding is to take recordings of a user's brain activity and predict the words that the user was hearing or saying or imagining,” he noted. “Eventually, we hope that this technology can help people who have lost the ability to speak due to injuries like strokes, or diseases like ALS.”

Tang and his colleagues were able to produce their decoder with the help of three human participants who each spent 16 hours in an fMRI machine listening to stories. The researchers trained an AI model referred to as GPT-1 in the study on Reddit comments and autobiographical stories in order to link the semantic features of the recorded stories with the neural activity captured in the fMRI data. This way, it could learn which words and phrases were associated with certain brain patterns.

Midjourney 5.1 Arrives - And It’s Another Leap Forward For AI Art

Midjourney 5.1 Arrives - And It’s Another Leap Forward For AI Art | AI Singularity | Scoop.it

Midjourney 5.1 has been released, bringing another significant improvement in the quality of results from the generative AI art service. The company claims that version 5.1 of the engine is “more opinionated”, bringing it closer to the kind of results that you would get with version 4 of Midjourney, but at a higher quality. There’s also a “raw” mode, for those who don’t want images that are as strongly opinionated. Other claimed improvements include greater accuracy, fewer unwanted borders or text artifacts in images, and improved sharpness.

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT plugins

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT plugins | AI Singularity | Scoop.it

In line with their iterative deployment philosophy, OpenAI is gradually rolling out plugins in ChatGPT so they can study their real-world use, impact, and safety and alignment challenges—all of which they will have to get right in order to achieve their stated mission. Users have been asking for plugins since the launch of ChatGPT, and many developers are experimenting with similar ideas. These plugins unlock a vast range of possible use cases. OpenAI is starting with a small set of users and is planning to gradually roll out larger-scale access as they learn more (for plugin developers, ChatGPT users, and after an alpha period, API users who would like to integrate plugins into their products). OpenAI is excited to build a community shaping the future of the human–AI interaction paradigm.

The documentation to build a plugin for ChatGPT is available. The first plugins have been created by ExpediaFiscalNoteInstacartKAYAKKlarnaMiloOpenTableShopifySlackSpeakWolfram, and Zapier.

ChatGTP-4 Prompted To Talk With Itself About “The Singularity”

ChatGTP-4 Prompted To Talk With Itself About “The Singularity” | AI Singularity | Scoop.it

When prompted ChatGPT-4 to generate a dialogue with itself through various personalities of its own choosing. I did virtually nothing after setting up the lengthy prompt. ChatGPT-4 came up with the different experts that it decided were best qualified to address my question on The Singularity.

This is something new. I love it and think you will too. But, even though you are reading an Ai’s conversation with itself, do not expect too much. Baby Chat GPT-4 is not even close to superintelligent yet. The five personas were somewhat repetitive, and not too deep, but still, an overall impressive educational performance. I think it bears close scrutiny and you may benefit from re-reading it a few times. The Ai that the public has been given access to is intelligent, but far from sentient. We are at least five years away from that, as I have written about recently.

ChatGPT-4 decided it needed five experts to discuss my question. I did not specify a number or who they should be. It picked a Computer Scientist, a Futurist, a Philosopher, a Social Scientist and a Robotics Engineer. I also added what the prompt engineers call a “Devil’s Advocate” personality to these from time to time. That is really quite close to my day-time role in “real life” as an attorney. I also prompted ChatGPT a couple of times to unite the five experts into one, and give its overall view.

Microsoft announces the next wave of AI innovation for Bing and Edge

Microsoft announces the next wave of AI innovation for Bing and Edge | AI Singularity | Scoop.it

Just three months ago, we unveiled the new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge to reinvent the future of search with your copilot for the web. We aimed to tackle a universal problem with traditional search – that nearly half of all web searches go unanswered, resulting in billions of people’s searches falling short of the mark. We launched the new Bing to bring you better search results, answers to your questions, the ability to create and compose, and with a new level of ease of use by being able to chat in natural language.  Bing combines powerful large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4 with our immense search index for results that are current, cited and conversational – something you can’t get anywhere else but on Bing. This is fundamentally changing the way people find information.

In just 90 days, our customers have engaged in over a half a billion chats, using chat features to get summarized answers to help them with everything from finding the best place to travel for someone with pollen allergies, to organizing the last 10 years of worldwide volcanic activity into a table. We have also seen people create over 200 million images with Bing Image Creator. All up, Bing has grown to exceed 100 million daily active users and daily installs of the Bing mobile app have increased 4X since launch. As a result we are seeing growth of Bing share and it follows the eight straight quarters of growth in our Microsoft Edge browser share. We’re excited about continuing to make Bing more accessible by its introduction to the Windows taskbar, reaching over half a billion customers every month.

Entering the next generation of AI-powered search
Today I’m thrilled to share we are moving to the next generation of AI-powered Bing and Edge to transform the largest category of software in the world – search – by greatly expanding the vision and capabilities we think of as Your Copilot for the Web. This next generation is defined by:

  • Opening up Bing to more people by moving from Limited Preview to Open Preview and eliminating the waitlist for trial.
  • Moving from text-only search & chat to one that is incredibly more visual with rich image/video answers and coming shortly, new multimodal support.
  • Moving from single use chat/search sessions to multi-session productivity experiences with chat history and persistent chats within Edge.
  • Opening up platform capabilities so developers and third parties can build on top of Bing to help people take actions on their queries and complete tasks.
