MILAN (AP) — The cardinal’s response was not what Yolanda Martínez had expected — or could abide. Her son had been sexually abused by a priest of the Legion of Christ, a disgraced religious order. And now she was calling Cardinal Valasio De Paolis -- the Vatican official appointed by the pope to lead the Legion and to clean it up -- to report the settlement the group was offering, and to express her outrage.
The terms: Martínez’s family would receive 15,000 euros ($16,300) from the order. But in return, her son would have to recant the testimony he gave to Milan prosecutors that the priest had repeatedly assaulted him when he was a 12-year-old student at the order’s youth seminary in northern Italy. He would have to lie.

My apologies to the folks on both Twitter and Facebook who subscribe to Operation Hyacinth / #OpHyacinth and experienced an interruption in their service. The good people at paper.li made some changes to their user interface that I didn't learn quickly enough.
Trump is making his bid to economically disenfranchise the working poor, their families, elderly voters, disabled voters and veterans can be found in all of those groups. It's the most heinous double-cross in recent memory, because Trump promised his supporters that he would protect Social Security. That promise was central to his 2016 presidential campaign and remember: Nobody likes getting double-crossed, not even Trump supporters.

“Let’s try to listen to the story of some person who made a mistake: a prisoner, a convict, a drug addict,” Francis said. Without neglecting to consider personal responsibility, he said, you can ask yourself whether these mistakes are the result of a “story of hatred and abandonment that someone carries with him.”

"Pope Francis said that when we go through difficult days, we must always remember that life is a miracle that God has created from nothing.
“In this life we have received so much: existence, a father and a mother, friendship, the wonders of creation,” he said.
“If you love, it is because someone next to you has awakened you to love, making you understand how in it lies the meaning of existence,” he explained.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has issued sweeping new sex abuse legislation for the Vatican City State and Vatican diplomats that requires the immediate reporting of allegations...
Anonymous Hades's insight:
Pope Francis requires the immediate reporting of each and every sex abuse allegation. Soon we will see who has the courage and the decency to emulate his example.
Pope Francis has changed the world. From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has gone out of his way to reach out to “the other.” He has gone beyond his own tribe. He is a Catholic who is a global citizen, valuing all the citizens of this world – even the ones he would disagree with.
"The leader should be in the midst of his army, in touch with it, sharing good and bad with the masses he leads. This alone makes him equal to the heavy demands made upon him. He needs also the recognition of the ruler. The decorations he receives are justified, because there is no question of personal preferment here: the whole army, whose center he is, is honored in his person." - The I Ching: Shih / The Army (7).
Pope Francis called on Catholics to embrace political pluralism Monday, insisting that there is no longer any place for a “Catholic party.”
Saying the “Church is not afraid of history”, Pope Francis announced on Monday he plans to open fully the Vatican’s secret archives on the wartime pontificate of Pope Pius XII, a historic move that Jews have sought for decades.
Cardinal George Pell, Pope Francis’ top financial adviser and the Vatican’s economy minister, bowed his head but then regained his composure as the 12-member jury delivered unanimous verdicts in the Victoria state County Court on December 11 after more than two days of deliberation.
"There is a struggle going on between the pope and his supporters who want a change, and a lot of people amongst the bishops and amongst the clergy who don't want transparency and applying law and order in the abuse issue in the world".- Marco Politi |
The pope’s gathering of economists in Assisi next month is part of a long process of establishing a new economic model that goes beyond financial self-interest, writes the social entrepreneur Felipe Witchger.
In 2000, Donald Foose was convicted and imprisoned for molesting an underaged relative. He lost his role as the principal of a Christian school, stripped of his teaching license, and deemed “a danger to the health, safety and welfare of students.” Nevertheless, Foose was still able to become the pastor...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Another founder of a Catholic religious movement has been defrocked for sexual misconduct and abusing his power, the latest in a string of purportedly orthodox, charismatic priests who turned out to be predators.
Pope Francis defrocked the Argentine priest, Roberto Juan Yannuzzi, after a four-year investigation determined he had sex with adults under his authority, absolved them of the sin during confession and otherwise abused his power.

Anonymous Hades's insight:
"Defrocking, or dismissal from the clerical state, is the most severe sanction the Vatican can impose on a priest. It is usually reserved for priests who sexually abuse minors. The fact that Yannuzzi was defrocked for having sex with adults, absolving them of the sin and abusing his other powers suggests his misconduct was particularly grave." - Nicole Winfield | AP
Anonymous Hades's insight:
This account was suspended in April 2019. At the time of the suspension, The Curse of Asmodeus was the most popular vector, followed by Denizens of Zophos, Agents of Behemoth and Minions of Belial, respectively.
The Curse of Asmodeus and the Denizens of Zophos are both multiple award-winning pages on the Scoop.it platform. The last award notification was received on January 29, shortly after the suspension was lifted.
In comparison, the Agents of Behemoth and the Minions of Belial never drummed up much interest. That may be due to a marketing flaw, but their numbers were lagging even before the suspension.
Something had to be done so, during the nine-month suspension, a number of adjustments were made.

“The Christian does not believe in an unavoidable ‘fate,’” he stated. “There is nothing haphazard in the faith of Christians: there is instead a salvation that waits to manifest itself in the life of every man and woman and to be fulfilled in eternity.”
Pope Francis' strength is as a pastor who calls people to conversion. He does not think like an administrator, one who establishes policies and structures to ensure things are done properly.
In a visit to a Roman parish on Sunday, Pope Francis encouraged Catholics to stop gossiping and ruminating on the shortcomings of other people, and to instead focus on repenting of their own sins.
Pope Francis himself has taken steps in the right direction, mandating that the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith take charge of such accusations and then, after the CDF said it couldn’t do it, transferring responsibility to the four Vatican offices charged with overseeing bishops and other ecclesiastical superiors. In 2016, his apostolic letter “As a Loving Mother” lowered the bar for removing bishops from office, from malice in stewardship to inability or incapacity to do the right thing.
Anonymous Hades's insight:
Pope Francis is doing the right thing, but Vatican officials are dragging their feet. They do not understand that times have changed and that, if they will not be part of the solution, they are problem.
Pope Francis on Thursday (Feb. 21) opened a highly anticipated four-day meeting on his church’s ongoing sex abuse crisis by calling on the assembled bishops and other Catholic leaders to “hear the cry of the little ones who plead for justice” and be “concrete.”
“The holy People of God look to us, and expect from us not simple and predictable condemnations, but concrete and effective measures to be undertaken. We need to be concrete,” Francis said. |
