The crew of aircraft carrier USS George H W Bush (CVN 77) continues to test a prototype torpedo countermeasures system as it trains to employ the system on deployment in 2014, US Navy (USN) sailors told IHS Jane's on 16 August.

Bush , the USN's 10th and final Nimitz-class carrier, is the first carrier to host the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense (SSTD) system.

SSTD integrates two technologies to provide ships with a hard-kill weapon to combat enemy torpedoes: the Torpedo Warning System (TWS), which comprises a towed array to detect, classify, and localise threat torpedoes; and the Countermeasure Anti-Torpedo (CAT), which consists of a torpedo enclosed in an all-up round - a fully integrated firing container for canister-launched missiles.

TWS and CAT were originally developed under the navy's Anti-Torpedo Torpedo Defensive Systems programme, which was intended to equip USN cruisers and destroyers.

Bush completed a successful at-sea end-to-end test of SSTD in mid-May 2013. Using the SSTD, Bush launched the CAT in response to torpedoes fired at the carrier.

Sailors manning Bush 's combat direction centre told IHS Jane's that while the system is an engineering development model (EDM) of SSTD, the prototype kinks are being worked out and they are excited to be deploying for operations with the defensive capability on board.

Following Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert's direction to accelerate SSTD system delivery to the fleet, the EDM system was installed on board Bush during a routine maintenance period.

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) officials told IHS Jane's during an interview in June that they plan to conduct a quick reaction assessment of the technology in October 2013.

The USN plans to equip its 11 carriers and a number of combat logistics force (CLF) ships with the SSTD by 2035. NAVSEA's SSTD programme office told IHS Jane's that it plans to install five more SSTDs on board USN carriers in the next three years - one in 2014 and two each in 2015 and 2016.

SSTD initial operational capability is expected in 2019.
