The future is learning with Heather McGowan

The future is learning with Heather McGowan | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

With the incredible speed at which technology is advancing and changing how we live, it’s crucial that we understand the impact that all of this is having – and is going to have – on how we work and learn.

And perhaps nobody is more well-versed in addressing this topic than internationally known speaker, writer, and thought leader, Heather McGowan. Heather is an innovator, synthesizer, and leading voice related to the context and impacts of accelerated change and she uses single frame visuals to help people process information more effectively.

In this episode of the Leading Learning podcast, Jeff talks with Heather about the intersection of the future of learning and work including why the type of change we are going through now is different from what we’ve experienced in the past, what we should expect to see related to this in the future, and how to better prepare for it.

Sir Ken Robinson’s Next Act: You Are the System and You Can Change Education | EdSurge News

Sir Ken Robinson’s Next Act: You Are the System and You Can Change Education | EdSurge News | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it
Sir Ken Robinson’s views on creativity are abundantly well documented. In his 2006 TED Talk—still the most-watched of all time—he claimed that “we are educating people out of their creative capacities” and charged the current education system with being too rigid in adhering to traditional academic subjects. Kids, he argued, need time to dance, draw, create and find what they’re good at.

But he hasn’t given up on schools or education—far from it, in fact. For his follow-up act, Robinson is releasing a new book for parents on how to raise capable children who thrive in school. Make no mistake, though, he’s still shaking up the system (and redefining what that actually means).

In a wide-ranging interview, Robinson recently spoke with us about collaboration versus competition, the all-important parent-teacher relationship and what every parent and educator can do to improve education.

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it
Bloom's Digital Taxonomy isn't about the tools or technologies rather it is about using these to facilitate learning. Outcomes on rubrics are measured by competence of use and most importantly the quality of the process or product. For example. Bookmarking a resource is of no value if the resource is inappropriate, invalid, out of date or inaccurate. Bloom's Digital Taxonomy lends itself to problem and project based learning where the student must work through the entire process of development and evaluation. The 21st Century Fluency Projects is an excellent example of how to work through the project or problem based learning frame work.

[PDF] Thinking & acting like a designer: How design thinking supports innovation in K-12 education

[PDF] Thinking & acting like a designer: How design thinking supports innovation in K-12 education  | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it
The needs of the twenty-first century demand new approaches to learning. Today, student success requires skills for collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving, and these skills are increasingly becoming a focus in both K-12 and higher education settings. But twenty-first century learning needs to be much more if we are to expect young people to both navigate an unknown and complex future and meet the challenges that accompany it.

We need change-makers, people who will redefine problems, inspire new ideas, take informed risks, and never stop learning. Change-makers implement and evolve solutions that aim to better the individual and the whole, be it a classroom, a school, a community, or a society. This is the approach of a designer and the focus of this publication.

Design touches all aspects of our world. As this publication shows, designers work to impact the human experience, and they generally do this with particular mindsets that encourage looking at challenges as opportunities for design. Four mindsets typically guide the behavior of a designer: human-centered, collaborative, optimistic, and experimental. Designers also often act in a particular way, following a process that helps them generate and evolve ideas, beginning with problem-defining and empathy, using synthesis and prototyping to develop strategic ideas, and ending with implementation.

Taken together, how designers think and act make for design thinking, a human-centered approach to creative thinking and problem solving. Thinking and acting as a designer and, in turn, employing design thinking are powerful ways to encourage people to become change-makers in education.

Neuroplasticity: The 10 Fundamentals Of Rewiring Your Brain

Neuroplasticity: The 10 Fundamentals Of Rewiring Your Brain | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it
Brain plasticity is a two-way street; it is just as easy to generate negative changes as it is positive ones. You have a “use it or lose it” brain. It’s almost as easy to drive changes that impair memory and physical and mental abilities as it is to improve these things. Merzenich says that older people are absolute masters at encouraging plastic brain change in the wrong direction.

An anatomy of the Modern Learning Professional

An anatomy of the Modern Learning Professional | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

In 2017 I am hoping for change: but not as a result of VR, mobile or micro-learning. I am hoping that we will adopt new approaches and new ways of thinking about learning, that in turn allow us to design experiences and resources that inspire and support learning in new ways (regardless of the technology to hand).

During the last couple of decades we have begun the process of marrying a new conception of learning to new capability sets. The result has been to redefine the process of learning design and the range of learning formats that we produce. And we have made some progress - the ambition of shifting 'from courses to resources' has spread, since I first talked about it five years ago, and it's not uncommon to meet colleagues who are trying to effect this change.
