Mount Kilimanjaro and 6 Interesting Facts to Know

You can see it rising in the distance as soon as you get off the plane and can’t wait to join the Mount Kilimanjaro tour to climb to the top. But how much do you know about Mount Kilimanjaro and the elusive challenge that it is? 5 Unique Ecosystems While many picture just a steep rock, Kilimanjaro is actually a much more complex mountain. Farmland and villages make up the first level, followed by jungles and forests, both thriving in the torrential rainfalls. Next come the heath zone and then the alpine desert zones, reached as the altitude climbs, where vegetation fades and temperatures fluctuate. Almost all plant and animal life has disappeared at the summit zone, and surface water is nearly non-existent at this the second closest point on earth to the sun. The World’s Tallest Free-Standing Mountain The tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro stands at 19,341 feet or 5,895 meters. The Science Behind Layout: Office Space & Your Employees

Designing the perfect office layout can seem a daunting task. There is a lot of pressure to avoid the cubicle farms that once dominated the office buildings beginning in the 1960s, but there has also been pressure lately to stick with the open-office layout, where dividers of any kind are scarce and coworkers are forced to be more connected with their other coworkers. However, researchers are now saying that there needs to be a balance between these two extremes in order to maintain a healthy, productive office environment.

Tanzania in the News: Defeating Drought

Tanzania has experienced chronic drought for the past several years now, threatening the economy and landscape with extreme lack of water. Around 80% of people in Tanzania rely on rain fed agriculture for their livelihood, leaving the well being of many vulnerable with continued lack of rain. So now, farmers and animal herders are taking steps to build a better system for their country, changing many of the ways they have worked for centuries in order to protect their future. Drip Irrigation This methodical approach to watering crops takes far less time and energy than other systems, as well as requiring less actual water to supply sufficient moisture to the plants. This technology has cut water use by around 75 percent in many areas, in addition to the lesser amount of water lost to evaporation. New laws also allow farmers to expand their planting onto government-controlled land provided they use irrigation sustainably, adding further benefits to sustainable water practices. Changing

10 Reasons Why Humor Should Be Used in the Office

Often times, people can be nervous about cracking jokes in the office. Generally speaking, this is because humor is often edgy and pushes social nicety envelopes—make the wrong joke to the wrong person, and you might be written up, or maybe even fired. However, while being cautious and respectful at work is always important, humor can be just as valuable. Here are just a few reasons to introduce a little more humor into the workplace. 1) Humor can put others at ease Laughter can be a great tension reliever in the workplace, and can even change the way you think. Studies show that people who laugh in the face of conflict are more likely to come up with multiple solutions to a problem vs. those who can only see single solutions. Humor also fosters creativity due to inspiring a more relaxed environment. 2) It can boost morale. Humor relieves stress and allows people to feel more comfortable, which in turn makes them more likely to enjoy being at work and look forward to returning. 3) Y

10 Lessons to Learn from Kilimanjaro

There are many reasons people travel from around the world to climb Kilimanjaro. Here are 10 of the many lessons you will learn along the way. The mountain is king. There’s a reason that only half of the 35,000 tourists who try to climb Kilimanjaro each year are successful. Forget everything you think you know about how to eat, walk, breathe, or drink water. The mountain will dictate your actions, and you must treat the unfamiliar territory with respect. The guide is the master. With dozens to hundreds of successful climbs, the guides know the mountain better than anyone. Leading you, advising you, watching and encouraging you, your guide will make it possible for you to reach the top. It is a team effort. As you climb, dozens of Tanzanian porters will be there to support and help you along the way, along with your fellow climbers. Because no amount of training and preparation can fully prepare you to climb a mountain like Kilimanjaro. Focus on the goal. Look up ahead for a moment a

Jobs, Growth, Opportunity: What Tourism Brings to Tanzania

Along with agricultural processing and mining, tourism is one of Tanzania’s largest industries. It directly employs nearly half a million people in the country and supplies close to twenty percent of total exports. In 2013 alone, tourism contributed to 12.7% of the country’s GDP and employed 11% of the population. The industry has long been a reliable source of income for struggling countries, inviting those around the world to visit and observe their landscapes and natural features, and Tanzania is no exception. The industry also has a long standing reputation of offering job opportunities to large percentages of the population who would otherwise struggle to find work, including those social groups that are commonly disadvantaged like women and younger generations. Additionally, tourism encourages land and wildlife preservation, providing entertainment for its guests and a healthier, more diverse planet. Despite its continued aid to these areas, there are still several aspects o

‘Iceman’ Runs Up Kilimanjaro, Shatters Record for Fastest Ascent

Wim Hof is not really made of ice, but he might as well be. The fifty-five year old extreme sports enthusiast has shattered the record for the quickest ascent up Mt. Kilimanjaro on January 15, 2015. In a mere 31 hours and 25 minutes, Hof and a group of eighteen other climbers reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which sits at a cool 19,340 feet above sea level. For the Iceman, it’s just another world record that he’s broken, (#26 in fact) but to us, it’s a feat that’s so impossible we’re still not sure how he accomplished it. Even scientists aren’t quite sure how his body was able to overcome the strain of the ascent. But they’ll soon have a better idea because Wim is going to run up the mountain again and blood samples will be taken by researchers at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. Wim Hof says his ability all stems from his special breathing technique, which he rightly calls The Wim Hof Method. He claims that he can control his body’s thermostat through d
