One thing I love about yoga asanas is that I can build strength simply by using my own body—I don’t need any weights or expensive machines. Holding the body in yoga’s various poses while resisting gravity builds muscle strength, while also helping build strong bones. 


Even moving into and out of poses, especially when done slowly and with awareness, helps gain strength throughout the body. We’ll also build strength in a variety of poses simply by holding them a little longer.

For many, shoulder tension can be chronic. Left unchecked, we can get used to the discomfort and not even realize how much it’s restricting our movements. Of course, if we don’t do anything about it, at some point, it is likely to become quite painful and even cause headaches, backaches, and other problems.

Yoga offers us wonderful techniques to help us become aware of what’s going on in our bodies. Even simple neck exercises, gently turning the head from one side to the other, help us become aware of tension that may have built up around the shoulders and neck. We may be able to turn our head to one side easily, whereas the other side feels tight and doesn’t move as freely.

Yoga has many balancing poses and of course, nearly all poses increase flexibility in some way. Balance and flexibility are essential to prevent falling and to reduce the chance of injury if you do fall. As you know, injuries from falling are very common. In fact, in any given year, one third of people over 65 suffer a fall. And for those 80 and older, the number goes up to fifty percent. The key to not falling is good balance. The better your balance, the less chance there is of falling. Balance takes practice—so I usually include at least one balancing pose when I practice.

Don’t let the cold stop you from practicing asanas. I know what it’s like to get out of a warm bed into a cold room on a winter’s day before you’ve had a chance to turn up the heater. Your body feels stiff and the last thing you feel like doing is a forward bend. On cold days I always take a hot shower before I start my asana practice. The hot water takes away the chill and melts away the tension I’ve been holding in my muscles from being cold.

Wai Lana's insight:
You can start with easy exercises to warm up your joints and get any kinks out of your neck, back, and shoulders. You can also get a full-body warm-up with Salute to the Sun. Practice slowly at first, with awareness of how each part of your body feels as you move through the steps. This is helpful for deciding what poses to practice that day.

If the backs of your legs scream at you whenever you do straight-leg forward bends, it may well be that your hamstrings are tight. If you don’t stretch them regularly, they’ll stay that way—or even get stiffer. That’s not a good thing because tight hamstrings affect more than just our ability to bend forward with straight legs. They can make us more prone to injury—especially if we play sports. They can also interfere with good posture, which, in turn, can contribute to back pain.

Remember, everything in our body is connected so it’s also important to loosen and tone the muscles around the hips, stretch the calf muscles, and tone the abs. Be sure to practice a variety of asanas so that you’re regularly stretching and strengthening the entire body.
