Yellow Journalism Yellow journalism is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Yellow Journalism can also be referred to as yellow press. The term yellow journalism is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal mongering, or sensationalism. The word yellow journalism was first used during the famous newspaper wars between William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer II. Pulitzer's paper the New York World and Hearst's New York Journal changed the content of newspapers adding more sensationalized stories and increasing the use of drawings and cartoons. This was the begging of yellow journalism.

In 1941 Frank Luther Mott broke down yellow journalism into 5 characteristics. One was to scare headlines in huge print, often of minor news. The second one was too lavish use of pictures, or imaginary drawings. Third use of faked interviews, misleading headlines, pseudoscience and a parade of false learning from so-called experts The fourth is to emphasis on full-color Sunday supplements, usually with comic strips. The last one was to dramatic sympathy with the "underdog" against the system.

Norris wrote, the most significant discernible trend during the last two decades of the nineteenth century was not the raw growth of advertising, as impressive as it was; rather, it was the utilization of advertising to introduce new products, to homogenize tastes, and to create demand."  not to deny the importance of GAO reports or of significant but dull newspaper stories. But every now and again, I wish the newspapers landing on my doorstep contained a little more blood, took a position without being partisan, yelled a tad more, and brushed some yellow from the palette while painting their stories.. I wish our better newspapers availed themselves of some of the techniques of yellow journalism.
