The 22 books to read before you quit your job — STARTUPS + WANDERLUST + LIFE HACKING

The 22 books to read before you quit your job — STARTUPS + WANDERLUST + LIFE HACKING | Writing mag | Scoop.it

Mick D Kirkov's insight:

"After working in the Architecture industry for a couple of years, Cathryn become weary of a career fields with unreasonably long hours, short vacations, and a pay scale that didn't reflect her true value. She was intent on building a life she didn't want to escape from, but rather loved..."

So this is a true story that begins with an enormous investment of time, cause reading some 22 books in the modern human's rather missing spare time needs per se months if not years. But after this investment it's apparently clear that a success arrives "only" after hard work. Or luck. Or both.

The other method to quit a job and set up an own firm, that would be comparable to the infamous "British medicine" method after C.N. Parkinson, is to define the diagnose and consider the work done. Afterwards you learn by doing. You pay maybe much more than the $237.91 on 22 books in losses because of not knowing how, but it is the manly method, again after The Law of Lady Parkinson or whatever. One never knows out of what will let his weight grow (a Bulgarian street language proverb).

Mick D Kirkov's insight:

It doesn't matter how senseless and ugly the over-constructed vehicles could work on our imagination, the main point is to respect and keep the art laws and if this is a relatively new field like diesel as opposite to steam, create own laws in the art, that's important. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Translators

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Translators | Writing mag | Scoop.it
Ever since the Tower of Babel, we’ve been struggling to communicate with each other.  Translators go a long way towards restoring our connections, but written translation has its own particular challenges that spoken translation does not.  The eventual reader doesn’t have the luxury of gauging the tone of a speaker’s voice or watching expressions.  These are a few habits for translators of the written word to develop so that even when the words change, the intent does not.1. Find a TemplateTranslating an apartment lease form?  Medical reports?
Mick D Kirkov's insight:

1. Find a Template -----

2. Check the Meaning (e.g. in a conversion dictionnary) -----

3. Translate the Translation (back) -----

4. Know the Culture (e.g.   Japanese business culture has various levels of discourse; there is polite language and super-polite language, depending on the hierarchy of the individuals involved.) -----

5. Beware the Idiom -----

6. Develop a Specialty (e.g. It doesn’t matter whether you focus on biochemistry or the fashion industry, just have a specialty or two.) -----

7. Make it Beautiful (Remember that words have not only meaning, but power.  A position paper needs to convince, a story needs to captivate, advertising copy needs to entice.  Go beyond the simple by-the-numbers translation and seek to convey the emotion of the original writer. )

Mick D Kirkov's insight:

June 2, 2015

The day before yesterday a brand new Chrisler Prowler, black one (that means, it was constructed in 1999 or 2000) was driving parallel to me in front of the Bern's railway station. I knew the story that: "Only one High Voltage Electric Blue Prowler with matching trailer was made. Signified the end of production in February 15, 2002."  But that black one was brand new, I swear! Anyway, dieselpunk from time to time, steampunk some times, and in the rest of the time simply punk like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9uubncbRlM or rather Daft Punk like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NF-kLy44Hls
