The contemporary business world lauds those who are seen as creative. Innovators such as Elon Musk and Jony Ive have become household names. Yet, for many of us, despite our best efforts to be recognized as creative thinkers, our suggestions in meetings are ignored and our pitches to bosses get rebuffed.

If your colleagues have already formed an opinion of you as technically competent but a little staid, it’s going to take a lot to change their minds and get them to listen — a situation that’s especially true for women, who, research suggests, are often unfairly viewed as less creative than men.

Large-scale organizational change has always been difficult, and there’s no shortage of research showing that a majority of transformations continue to fail. Today’s dynamic environment adds an extra level of urgency and complexity. Companies must increasingly react to sudden shifts in the marketplace, to other external shocks, and to the imperatives of new business models. The stakes are higher than ever.

So what’s to be done? In both research and practice, we find that transformations stand the best chance of success when they focus on four key actions to change mind-sets and behavior: fostering understanding and conviction, reinforcing changes through formal mechanisms, developing talent and skills, and role modeling. Collectively labeled the “influence model,” these ideas were introduced more than a dozen years ago in a McKinsey Quarterly article, “The psychology of change management.” They were based on academic research and practical experience—what we saw worked and what didn’t.

Digital technologies and the changing nature of the workforce have created new opportunities and challenges for the influence model (for more on the relationship between those trends and the model, see this article’s companion, “Winning hearts and minds in the 21st century”). But it still works overall, a decade and a half later (exhibit). In a recent McKinsey Global Survey, we examined successful transformations and found that they were nearly eight times more likely to use all four actions as opposed to just one.1 Building both on classic and new academic research, the present article supplies a primer on the model and its four building blocks: what they are, how they work, and why they matter.

For fifty or sixty years job-seekers have been taught to write their resumes in the most opaque and unhelpful way imaginable.

Job-seekers have been taught to use terse, governmental language in their resumes, so that almost every job-seeker sounds identical to every other job-seeker!

That's the worst possible approach. You are not a dry, dusty person — you are lively and creative! Why not show some of that creativity and spark in your resume?

This is a most important and highly informative write up by Liz Ryan! Resume writing is something we teach at school at the grade twelve level in India as part of job applications. We do not, however, don't tell our students to mention the "ten things" listed by Liz. Most of us professionals would prefer to outsource the designing of our resumes to an expert. However, for those of us who do our resumes ourselves, it would be a good idea to speak with our "own voice" and not hesitate in being "honest"! We are so used to cliches and accepted conventions that oftentimes, our resumes sound dead and boring. I will surely revisit my resume after this!

Belief change is a war of attrition. There's usually no one argument that can suddenly get someone to see the light.

 

Changing someone's mind about a high-stakes position is a challenge many of us confront. Maybe your customers have preconceived ideas about your brand or products that you'd like to influence, or perhaps upper management is leaning toward a decision that you disagree with. In order to get someone to reconsider their views, it's important to understand the role of coherence in supporting beliefs.

 

Going back to the 1950s, psychologists have recognized the interplay among different aspects of knowledge that influence our overall set of beliefs. Building off that research, the cognitive scientist Paul Thagard has more recently put forth the concept of "explanatory coherence."

This is a very powerful aritcle that addresses an issue most of us will have faced in our careers and social life. It is simply difficult to change minds overnight, let alon instantly. When I shifted from a school that dealt with traditional pedagogy to one that was one of the pioneers in experiential pedagogy, I simply couldn't take it! The adage, 'unlearn everything' to learn something new, did not work with me for a whole six months! It took about two years finally to make me understand that experiential pedagogy does work, and that students will get to the end point on their own, provided they are given subtle cues and hints. It takes skill and science to convince people to change overnight, and just telling them to 'unlearn everything' might not be a good idea! What matters is to 'sow incoherence', make people feel worse about their current beliefs, supply them with information from different sources that support a change in their beliefs, and yes what matters is to 'address their emotional attachment to what they believe.' It is only then that you might be able to bring about a change in someone's mind!

A 2014 Oxford Economics Assessment of Paid Time Off in the U.S. showed 42% of employees with paid time off finished the year with unused days, leaving an average of 8.1 days unused.

Small business owners are especially bad at taking time away. According to the 2013 Sage Reinvention of Small Business Study, 43% of small business owners are taking less vacation time than five years ago.

 

The fact that we don't use all of our vacation time isn’t all that surprising. After all, getting away for a few days or weeks can be overwhelming when it feels like stepping away from the office will create a painful backlog of work when you return.

 

But what if stepping away from the daily grind made you better at your job?
