When It Comes to Branded Content Headlines, Longer Is Better for Sure. (See What We Did There?) - eMarketer

When It Comes to Branded Content Headlines, Longer Is Better for Sure. (See What We Did There?) - eMarketer | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it

It turns out longer is better—at least when it comes to writing headlines for branded content.

Branded content technology provider Polar analyzed a bunch of data provided by premium publishers, such as Oath and Gannett, to see how variation in headlines affected key performance indicators (KPIs).

It found that branded content headlines between 90 and 99 characters achieved a clickthrough rate (CTR) of 0.43%, higher than headlines with fewer characters.

The “more is better” theory also held true for the number of words included in a headline. Polar reported that headlines with 16 words garnered a CTR of 0.33%. By comparison, pithy headlines of just four words recorded an average CTR of less than half that, at just 0.14%.

Some other tips Polar gleaned from its work? Numbers and special characters also resulted in a bump in CTRs. So feel free to figure out how to squeeze an ampersand in there....

How to Publish 100 High-Impact Blog Posts This Year

How to Publish 100 High-Impact Blog Posts This Year | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it

Since our first reader in August of 2014, we’ve steadily increased our traffic, and we're now consistently drawing 5,000 plus readers per month to our blog. Our traffic is increasing at a growing rate, and we're optimistic about doubling or tripling our traffic in the upcoming year.

If you're a small company like ours — under 20 employees — you're probably wondering how we can consistently publish over 100 quality blog posts annually in addition to getting our “day jobs” done. The answer is in our process.

There are five important steps that make up our process, and each is critical in helping us accomplish our goal of publishing 100 high quality new blog posts annually. These steps use the HubSpot blogging and social tools....

Via Jeff Domansky
rodrick rajive lal's insight:
Maintaining a publication schedule, preparing an annual calendar and planning topics for the whole year will help publish a significant number of blog posts in a year. I guess we could also use artificial intelligence to narrow down on topics that are most likely to be of significance in the coming year!

15 proverbs from around the world that you should start using ASAP.

15 proverbs from around the world that you should start using ASAP. | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it

If you live in America, chances are you've heard (or used) the phrase "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Most of us know it means, essentially, that you shouldn't make all your plans based on one possible thing happening. But it's kind of a weird phrase, right? Have you ever stopped to wonder where it originated?

Its use in print has been traced to the novel "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes in the early 1600s, although it possibly was mistranslated to an inexact English idiom from the original and may have other roots in Italian phrases.

Different cultures around the world all have their own similar sayings — proverbs, if you will — that make sense to those who've grown up speaking the language but sound downright odd to anyone who hasn't.

James Chapman is fascinated by these sayings and how they translate across languages and cultures....

Via Jeff Domansky
rodrick rajive lal's insight:
Proverbs are culture specific and culture sensitive. Proverbs are also a condensation of the folk wisdom of a particular country, community or region. It is great fun to study proverbs from around the world because it helps you learn more about different cultures and different ways of thinking! Some proverbs are common across cultures. The proverb, 'empty vessels make noise', has an equivalent in one of the Indian dialects that zgoes'empty husks make a lot of noise.'

rodrick rajive lal's insight:

Well, I guess the seven strategies in this article do make some sense for writers of blogs, such as me. A very important realization is that what we write very often is not very reader friendly, moreover this stems from the fact that a lot of writing fails to have a conversational element to it. For many, increased readership could mean increased income, for those who want to shift from part time blogging to full time blogging!

How to Effortlessly Write Captivating Headlines

How to Effortlessly Write Captivating Headlines | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it

Do you know what the average attention span of a reader is today? It’s 8.2 seconds. You read that right. The average attention span of someone visiting your page is less than it takes you to drink a glass of water. You have less than 10 seconds to convince your readers that your content is more than good; you have to convince them that it’s remarkable.

Luckily, you can make your headlines way better if you pay attention to a couple of simple rules....

Better headlines get better readership – a simple blogging truth. Great article that differentiates between headlines and titles. Apparently what drives SEO is not just key-words, but also better headlines that direct readers to specific articles. Amazed to know that the attention span of adults has come done to 8.2 seconds!
