Maintaining balance in the Antarctic marine food chain is dependent on a negative phase of the "Southern Annular Mode," or SAM. This is the shift in atmospheric pressure between mid-latitudes and Antarctica. During the wintertime, a negative SAM means hefty winds and heavy sea ice followed by a calm spring and stable water column in summer. Once the winds die down come summer, it delays ice retreat. The entire food chain is dependent on this SAM pattern.

With the climate changing and temperatures warming, the balance is changed. This impacts the Antarctic food chain.

The core of the Earth is was powers the volcanoes heat. The core also causes the continents to move/drift apart. It happens because hot rock rises. Near the surface the rock spreads in two directions and goes sideways which then begins to lose heat. Eventually the much cooler rock sinks back down. through this process, the Earth's crust is very slowly dragging apart - causing the continents to move apart.

The core not only causes them to move apart, it also causes them to crash together. For example, New Zealand was created by 4 islands which the core caused to move together. This movement not only created the continent of New Zealand, but the famous mountains that lie within it. When the islands crashed together, the land was forced to push upwards, creating the mountains.

An earthquake causes major destruction. Entire cities can be wiped out at terrible human cost. In October 2005, a devastating earthquake hit the Western Himalayas. Satellites measuring the height of the surrounding land before and after the earthquake. It showed how the hills to the east of the earthquake's epicentre  had risen as much as 5 metres during the earthquake. This process happen thousands of times, helping build the Himalayas.

Too little ice reduces the habitat for krill, a critical food source for emperor penguins. If the krill are too decline, then the emperor penguins are to reduce. this is not only a problem for the penguins, but a problem for the animals higher up on the food chain. Mammals like leopard seals and orcas depend on the penguins as their food source.
