Interesting article from Prof. Andy Hopper from IET - particularly in reference to what kids consider to be the STEM 'switch-off' factors. The one that stuck wth me was 'that they are reluctant to take subjects they may not achieve highly in'. Was that really them, their parents and/or the school?

The DBS launches its new service offering on 17/06, aimed and reducing the duplication of effort/cost associated with clearance and enhancing the speed of cleared individuals being able to move into available roles.

There were 4.2m DBS checks performed in 2012. Around 500,000 people applied for more than one check (@£88) and 2.1m people were being rechecked by their employer (@£44)..

68% of employers surveyed by Working Knowledge said that "the limited capacity and resources of their business would make it difficult to offer work experience placements to students."

Or is there an issue of mind-set? Whilst the vital work experience situation addresses itself - with a support of many commendable organisations and individuals - encouragingly, over half of those surveyed said they would be most likely to look twice at a school or college leavers’ CV if they were able to ‘demonstrate a passion for their industry in their personal statement’.

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock today (Thursday) set out plans for a new programme to equip young people with the skills they need to compete for Apprenticeships and other jobs.

"The new Traineeships programme, which could be in place by September 2013, would provide young people aged 16 to 24 with a tailor-made package of support that will give them the confidence, skills and experience to compete in the labour market with more experienced adults"..all comments welcomed by the Skills Minister..

A new report by The Prince's Trust and The Royal Bank of Scotland has revealed that thirty per cent of young people believe they will be self-employed in the future. The UK could be on the brink of a youth business boom.
