Sparkle Your Way Across the Jingle Bell Run Finish Line - SELF | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
The weather outside might be frightful, but we cant complain when the workout gear is so delightful.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

The Christmas spirit may be bringing a little more sparkle to winter fitness apparel. Many fitness lines including Nike, Adidas, Lululemon, and New Balance have released specific pieces just for the holiday season to get fitness junkies in yuletide cheer. For Lulu in particular, they have released "Shine tights,"  full length tights with black, white, and gold shimmery dots. New Balance, Nike and Adidas are all working on sparkly and metallic shoes that will be sure to stand out this holiday season. These apparel pieces will sure to be a hit for gifts. I cannot say that I personally would want to receive sparkly shoes, however those who do, will be the most stylish ladies at the annual Jingle Bell Run.

The New Trend in Workout Fashion

The New Trend in Workout Fashion | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
As the line between ready-to-wear and activewear blurs, there are more ways than ever to look good while exercising and beyond.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

According to Chanel creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, activewear and ready-to-wear apparel categories are merging. Many fashion designers are justifying their new fashionable fitness clothing lines, by saying that women shouldn't be shortchanged when it comes to exercise and looking great. Sweating and socializing should be able to be done while looking your best. Some designers are even going as far as to call traditional activewear outdated. It is odd to see the changes in fitness attire even at the KU Rec Center. It is rare to see women in shorts these days. Leggings and yoga pants have taken over the gym. Additionally, tshirts and cut-offs are a thing of the past. Nowadays, sweat wicking, moisture absorbing, brightly colored shirts and tanks fill the gym.

Winter fitness fashion: it's all about the base... layer! | welltodo London

Winter fitness fashion: it's all about the base... layer! | welltodo London | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
If you're hitting the ski slopes, running outdoors or skipping between studios, when it comes to winter fitness fashion it's all about the base layer!
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Since the colder weather seems to be sticking around, London fashion experts have named the top five must-have base layers for any outdoor pursuit. What do all these base layers have in common? Sweat wicking technology. Additionally, a couple of these apparel pieces are made of wool, making them especially warm.  Others provide ventilation and offer more breathable material. These brands featured I had never heard of. I am assuming they are not international brands and are only sold in Europe, however, I am sure that there are apparel companies here in the U.S. that make very similar products. I am wondering if base layer technology is shared globally, or if certain colder climate countries have discovered new materials to make work out clothing even warmer, yet breathable.

Next Fitness Trackers Will Be Printed on Clothes : DNews | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Unlike other trackers, these can simply be tossed in the wash after a sweaty workout.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

The latest in fitness technology is sensors embedded in workout clothing. We are now able to move from chunky motherboard pieces to tiny, stretchable electrical circuits that can be printed on fabric. These circuits will be able to do everything a bulky fitness watches can do, yet can be embedded in sports bras, shirts, bicycle shorts, and the like to make tracking fitness even easier.

The future of this brand new technology could lie in the healthcare field. Researchers are developing these circuits to be able to monitor health conditions and possibly predict health risks before they happen. What's more sexy than that?

Psychology of Lululemon: How Fashion Affects Fitness

Psychology of Lululemon: How Fashion Affects Fitness | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Does expensive athletic wear actually incline us to work out? "Enclothed cognition" proposes that the clothes you wear directly affect how we think and what we do.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Two researchers coined a term "enclothed cognition" to describe the mental changes we undergo when we wear certain clothing. They may be onto something. They say that it's all about the symbolic meaning you associate with the clothing you wear. They are finding this is true for fitness and athletic clothing as well. When wearing athletic clothing, people are more inclined to want to stay fit and head to the gym. If this is true for most, I may start wearing athletic clothing more often, in order to get myself to the gym. Within the previous year, the activewear market has increased by 7% whereas general apparel market only grew 1%. Women now want fashion and function in their athletic clothing apparel.

The desire to look good at the gym is nothing new. Today athletic clothing does more than make your waist look small or your butt big, it is designed to fit your lifestyle. Whether that be going to the grocery store after hitting up the gym, or picking your kids up from school.

Lululemon has perfected the business model for selling. Women have bought into the "cult-like" brand. Sure, lulu clothing has gotten its share of criticism, but they are one of the first fitness apparel brands that has perfected the art of fashionable gym clothes. Gym clothing is no longer tucked away in a bag, it is made to be shown off and worn in and out of the gym.

Women's Sportswear, Activewear & Workout Clothes | Fabletics | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Fabletics
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Kate Hudson has come out with her own, "affordable" sportswear line called Fabletics. She understands that women want to look their best when heading to the gym, but don't want to spend a fortune. She has created a solution to that problem and has been rather successful. I had heard about Fabletics about a month ago when one of my friends recommended I check out the site. To my surprise, these quality athletic clothing pieces were in my college budget. In fact, first time customers receive an additional promotion. The first outfit is only $25! Yes, I said outfit. That $25 included a pair of leggings, a workout tank, and a headband. I was astonished at the variety that Kate's line was offering in this promotion. I ordered right away, and received my clothing in less than a week. I was elated and couldn't find a single flaw with becoming a member of Kate Hudson's new line. Other than the daily email reminding me to check out the latest styles, there was virtually nothing wrong with this site, until I read the fine print...of course. I was locked in. My membership meant that I was required to spend at least $50 a month in order to keep my VIP status, and if I did not do so, $20 would be charged on my account for which I could later use for purchases. However, being a college student I know that I do not have the funds to 1) spend $50 a month on athletic clothing, and 2) don't have the desire to lose $20 for "later purchases." I ended up calling and canceling my account upon receiving my package. I talked to an international call assistant for nearly 20 minutes explaining that all I wanted to do was cancel my account and I was aware of the consequences of losing my membership. Overall, I can say that I am happy with the products and it is a great deal! However, they get you with the monthly fees and penalties for not purchasing. Kate Hudson knows how keep her customers.

10 Fitness Brands You're Mispronouncing

10 Fitness Brands You're Mispronouncing | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
“Nice leggings, where did you get them?” can be the both the best and worst compliment you receive at the gym or fitness studio. It’s great that your selection of spandex has received a nod of approval, but now you’re put on the spot and have to try to properly pronounce the brand’s name,
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

When I first heard of the lululemon brand of leggings, I cannot express how self-conscious I was to even say the name brand out loud. This stigma comes with a lot of foreign brand names but many of the most common fitness brands are American! Over half of the brands mentioned in this article I have never even heard of, and they are U.S. based. The wide variety of top-of-the-line fitness brands astonishes me each day. Women are now faced with more choices when it comes to what they want to wear to the gym, and prices are competitive for this reason. Many of my friends still stick to the more well-known brands such as lululemon and Athleta, however, it's only a matter of time before other exotic brands take make their way to our midwest market.

Ralph Lauren and Tory Bursch have started to implement technology enhancements to their fitness apparel line while maintaining their fashion niche.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

It is no secret that our society has become more health conscious, thus making working out a regular task. Name brands such as Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren have used this to their advantage when creating their new technology in clothing and accessories. Who wouldn't want a Ralph Lauren tech-embedded sport shirt? Whatever that means. The point is many men and women are taking a liking to the new technology in fitness fashion and are buying these odd items to keep with the times.

Fashion and Fitness, They Now Go Together | FitnessProspector.com, Fitness and Exercise | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Fashion and fitness. Never used to be much of a subject.  You really didn't worry about what to wear when working out.  Now most of us do
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Fitness and fashion did not used to be a subject people were worried about. Nowadays, women will not be caught dead in the gym wearing gym shorts and a tshirt. It really is all about the fitness clothing. In these videos, there are examples of just what girls sport when they workout. They specifically mention that Lululemon has made breaking a sweat look good. It intrigues me how this short of craze got started. Who decided that it was no longer acceptable to wear a tshirt to the gym? It was probably all these cute workout clothes designers. Women love to look slimmer, smaller, and curvier, and these workout clothes are doing just that. On top of that, there are thousands of new designs and prints that are attracting women of all ages. So much so that women are taking workout apparel to the streets. I could go to Target right now and see at least 10 women and girls wearing Lulu leggings and I can guarantee about half of them are sporting a matching tank.

The Crazy Evolution Of Workout Clothes, From Petticoats To Lululemon
Huffington Post
Sometimes cute new workout gear can be the deciding factor between spending the evening on the couch and actually making it to the gym.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

The evolution of fitness clothing is no secret. A common date party theme is 1980's workout for example. At these parties you'll find women sporting the neon, spandex leotards and boys rocking the short shorts and headbands. Fashion in fitness has come a long way, but has it gone to far? Nowadays women and teenagers are spending hundreds on a simple outfit. The pricing of some of this fitness apparel is outrageous. Lululemon is a commonly picked on source for this pricey apparel. But they are not the only ones asking a fortune for a pair of yoga pants. Athleta and other brands charge around the same. What's even more shocking than the prices is the new fashion statements the apparel is making. Being a college girl, I can tell you that ever single one of my friends owns at least one pair of lulu leggings. I can also tell you that if you do not own at least one pair, you are the minority. It is a sad, but real truth. These brands are brainwashing us into thinking that some of their newest, craziest styles are the items to have as well. The fitness fashion at the gym is something to watch out for...and maybe even in the streets.

Tory Burch and Fitbit collaborate to transform fitness trackers into stylish accessories.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Working for Nike, the new trend in stores seems to be the purchasing of the new fuelbands and fitness trackers. I would definitely agree that these bands have become more of a fashion statement than anything. Sure, they have been transformed into a great fitness tool, however daily we have consumers coming into our store daily requesting a fuelband, not even knowing the purpose or function for it. Just this last weekend, I had an interested consumer ask where the headphone jack was. This device is not specifically used to store and play music, so I found this question quite comical. Even being an advocate for the Nike brand and fuelband, I still question what type of consumers need to purchase one of these pricey accessories. I have to admit that I have succumb to the peer pressure from my fellow coworkers in that every employee must be the brand (of Nike). BNTL. Bring Nike to Life, buy purchasing this wrist accessory that I do not know all the uses for yet.

Forget smart watches and glasses, smart clothing will be the hottest trend of 2015

Forget smart watches and glasses, smart clothing will be the hottest trend of 2015 | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
The holiday season is kicking off, but we could get our first glimpse into next year's big tech trend in January. Smart watches may be the hot topic of 2014, but smart clothing could steal its thunder by next year.
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Just as smart watches have become a hit this past year, the latest and greatest technology advancement may be in the clothing itself. Cityzen Sciences' invented and have been working on a project codenamed D-Shirt. D-shirt contains sensors that detect movement, heart rate, speed, breathing patterns, and a GPS location device that is woven into the fabric. These shirts and matching cycling shorts are said to go out on the market in 2015. They may put an end to the wearable wrist technology some sources are saying. It's quite an advancement that this technology is woven into fabrics, but may invade privacy. If this technology is able to detect a user's location, what else may it be able to detect. Scientist are saying that this wearable technology may become so advanced that it will be able to detect medical conditions before they develop into serious health conditions. The use of technology and fitness clothing may be limitless.

It's a crazy thought that 2015 is just a month away, bringing with it the joy of our hottest months, skimpy clothing and some new trends to try in the world of fitness. - New Zealand Herald

Via Peter Mellow
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

One of the top fashion trends for the 2015 year is none other than fitness watches. Tom Tom watches, Fit Bits, Nike Plus,  and other tracking devices are said to be one of the trendiest accessories and ways to work out this next year. It comes as no surprise to me after working Black Friday this past weekend. Many shoppers were coming into the Nike Outlet to pick up Nike Fuelbands as presents for the holiday season. Although these bracelets aren't made for children or adolescents, seeing as there is no need for them to track their physical fitness, parents were purchasing them at their children's  requests. They have become a symbol of athleticism, and anyone, whether they admit to it or not, are using them to create an image of being in style. I have found that many users of these devices do not even know all the benefits the bands have to offer. They are after the sleek look and athletic image.

A Chic Fashion and Fitness Brand is Launching Today in Boston

A Chic Fashion and Fitness Brand is Launching Today in Boston | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Athletic wear is certainly having a moment right now, and fitness gear is no longer strictly reserved for wearing to the gym. Thanks to a number of high-profile models teaming up with fitness...
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

A new fitness line is opening today in Boston. After creator, John Udelson, has seen the recent success of fitness clothing in other major brands, he decided to try his own spin on it. He is creating a brand he wants women to feel comfortable  in throughout the entire day, whether that be at work, class, or  the gym.  My major criticism is where does Udelson plan to stand out? What is going to make his brand the one women want to buy? There are so many options out there for fashionable fitness apparel. Udelson has named his line Crane & Lion and claims that it will be "sophisticated" and "high quality," which to me sounds expensive. I believe that one of the major problems this new line will face is finding their identity within this newly competitive area. Only time and sales will tell. Who knows, maybe Crane & Lion will be the next Lululemon. I bet people were thinking he was crazy when he first started out too.

Nike Flash Reflective Wear

Nike Flash Reflective Wear | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Nike Page
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

"Run, don't hide" is Nike's new tag line for their fall and winter running apparel initiative. Nike promises consumers that darkness this winter won't get in the way of their runs with their new highly-reflective, water-resistant shoe and clothing designs. Nike gives runners no excuses not to run. With all this new technology, you can't imagine these designs would come at a cheap price. One of the women's running coats is $200 while the matching reflective leggings are $150. Safety doesn't come cheap! Customers who come into the Nike Outlet are always impressed by the new technology, however, sharing the price with them is one of my least favorite parts. I will say that one of my selling points on shoes especially is the reflective swoosh. By taking a picture with the flash on, consumers can see first hand how cool and edgy Nike's new products are.

Shoe Review: The Nike Studio Wrap

Shoe Review: The Nike Studio Wrap | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
If you suffer from sliding around on a mat during Pilates or yoga or prefer not to be barefoot during a barre class, then Nike's Studio Wrap Pack ($110) may be your answer to this problem.

The Studio Wrap Pack consists of three parts: the wrap
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

The studio wrap is a fairly new concept to someone who does not partake in floor choreography, mat exercises, or even yoga...someone like me. Working in the Nike Footwear department, I was forced to educate myself on the ins and outs of running and training shoes, and I knew this when I accepted the job. However, what I did not know was that I would be helping customers chose their next studio wrap and affecting their personal studio experience through their foot accommodations. I have come to find out that foot wraps aren't even necessary to take part in any studio session. In fact, wraps are basically just glorified socks with grips. Or, that is the way I see it anyways. Once again, this is coming from someone who has attended one yoga class and never returned. I do understand the benefits, but have no been able to justify the significant expense. In some cases this studio set can cost as much as $100. Nike provides a studio wrap set with 3 parts: the actual wraps that slide over your heal and arch that provide traction on mats. The pack also includes foot ribbons that wrap around your arch and up your ankle to provide extra support. The last piece is a pair of slip-on-flats, that can be worn with or without the rest of the pieces. Most ladies that come looking for studio wraps report never even wearing the slip-on-flats. The invention of studio wraps are not something I am necessarily surprised by. I am sure there will be a lot more off-the-wall designs that are yet to come.

Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Why has fashion taken over the fitness apparel world? Maybe because recently more people have become interested in fitness. Fitness apparel is casual and comfortable, allowing it to be worn on the streets, in the gym, and in some occasions in the office! I have noticed in the past years recently that casual clothing stores such as Old Navy, H&M, and even Gap have added an activewear department. With so much competition for active wear, Adidas and Nike are forced to advance their technology and place in fitness fashion. Nike and Adidas both have teamed up with Fashion icons to invent and brand newer, more fashionable looks and products.

Nike is going to make you run all through the winter... | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Nike's flashy new hi vis running range will keep you going through the worst of the British winter...
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Like every year, Nike is releasing new collections for this year's winter season. Reflective panels are being added on Nike's most popular shoes such as the Free 5.0, the LunarGlide 6, and Air Pegasus 31. Reflective material is also being added to running jackets and vests. As the winter season approaches, daylight hours become limited, making reflective panels a necessity when it comes to running in the evening or early morning. Nike also plans to introduce an Aeroloft Hybrid Jacket that regulates body temperature, preventing runners from shedding or adding layers depending on the outside temperature. This jacket may be one that flies off the shelves depending on functionality and of course, the price. It shall be interesting to see if athletic apparel competitors, such as Adidas and Underarmor, unveil some of the same advances.

Fitness and Fashion Take Center Stage at New York Fashion Week | Fit Bottomed Girls | Fit Chic | Scoop.it
Margo hits up New York Fashion Week for two fitness and fashion shows: Athleta's Crush of Adrenaline and Reebok's Ride the Runway!
Shelby Blankenbaker's insight:

Athletic fashion has hit the runway! What a weird concept to think about. When I think of Fashion Week, I think high-end, unaffordable, and something that I would never be caught dead in. I think of brands and designers that I cannot even begin to pronounce their names and collections. However during this New York Fashion Week, fitness brands like Athleta and Reebok took to the stage in a rather original way. Athleta hired high profile choreographers and danced, leaped, and exercised while showing off new collections. Reebok had their runway in the middle of a gym setting. What a change from the traditional runway scene. This is giving real world consumers, like me, a look at how the clothes hold up and work during physical activity, for which consumers are actually buying them for. It is a far out concept, but could be the future for athletic fashion.
