Private groups step in to show teachers how to use technology in the classroom - The Hechinger Report

Private groups step in to show teachers how to use technology in the classroom - The Hechinger Report | EdTech Talk | Scoop.it
It seems a waste. Millions of educational apps, millions of lesson plans available online, millions of laptops in the hands of students. Yet only a small segment of teachers nationwide find ways to infuse technology into their lessons. “There’s a real hunger out there, about how do I get better at my craft?” said Jeff …

6 Tips for the Successful Online Teacher -- THE Journal

6 Tips for the Successful Online Teacher -- THE Journal | EdTech Talk | Scoop.it
After two decades in online teaching in both the corporate world and higher education, I regret to report that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side of the network connection. While online teaching offers many rewards for instructors, it takes a special set of skills and attitudes to excel at it. And these are emphatically not the same skills and attitudes that make an exceptional classroom teacher. Here's the mindset it takes to be a successful online teacher.

Learning and Sharing with Ms. Lirenman: Eight Questions I Ask Before an App Can Stay on Student iPads

Learning and Sharing with Ms. Lirenman: Eight Questions I Ask Before an App Can Stay on Student iPads | EdTech Talk | Scoop.it

"For the past couple of years I've been really fortunate to have access to iPads in my classroom.  The increased access to this mobile technology has provided my students with that many more individualized opportunities to show and share their learning.   Now if you're new to this blog you may not realize that student choice and voice is something I believe very strongly about. Very strongly.  This means I am constantly looking for apps that  allow my students to learn, show, and share their knowledge in innovative ways.  As a result I purchase and download many, many iPad apps for my work iPad. I take them for a test drive sort of speak before they make their way onto the iPads my students have access to.  The reality is very few apps I test drive end up on my student's iPads.  But why?  Below you will find some of the questions I ask (and why) before an app will make it on my students iPads.  I am hoping this information will be of benefit for both teachers purchasing apps for their students, and developers creating apps for students.  Here are my top eight questions."

Using the iPad would make the research, peer editting process, and revising process easier.  Most students that enjoy writing do not enjoy the revise, editting process.  The use of the iPad definately streamlines the writing process!

Mary Kate Lavin's curator insight, January 23, 2014 10:08 AM

This article describes the writing process by using an ipad to organize, compose, and edit their written language.  Many students do not enjoy writing because of the process it takes for them to write (think of an idea, form the letters, make a complete sentence, and then edit the work)

Looking for a way to expand the horizons of its 600 students without leaving campus or breaking the annual budget, Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, DE, turned to videoconferencing as a viable alternative. I simply could not help scooping the BaiBoard app (sentiment towards the name of the tool) but I also see it as a perfect tool for real-time presentation of collaborative work done by a group of students. The app offers you a zoomable multi-page whiteboard and lets you collaborate even on PDF documents. And it is free!

Sharla Shults's curator insight, May 4, 2013 1:26 PM

Integrating technology in your teaching requires beforehand planning and structuring. It also predisposes the existence of a set of learning goals you  want to achieve through the integration of this technology in the class. So, the process is highly structured and pre-arranged and nothing is left for " happy accidents ".

Amanda Rogers's comment, May 4, 2013 6:11 PM
This is a great tool to refer to for integrating technology into lessons whilst encorporating learning goals and allowing for HOT. It is well structured and prevents lesving steps out.
Kia Sowden's comment, May 11, 2013 1:01 AM
I think many teachers struggle to truly integrate technology into their classrooms. I believe their is the common misconception that if you are 'using' technology you are integrating it into your teaching and learning. However there is a difference between the two.
