ASK PLAYBILL.COM: Macbeth ("The Scottish Play") - Playbill.com

There are several factors that have supposedly led to the curse of Macbeth. These factors are the blood, the ghosts, and the witch spells that occur in this play. In 1942 3 cast members died and a costume person commited suicide. Works have been written about this curse, like The Scottish Play and the movie "Never say Macbeth". Some believe that nothing can reverse the curse even if the play has one or more successful runs of the production.

The people performing the play Macbeth refer to it as the "Scottish play", "the plaid play",or just "that play". Macbeth has been cursed for many years and many have either died or been injured badly. Some other superstitions actors have are whistling backstage, saying good luck, and leaving shoes on the floor. Not all actors really believe in these but some believe bad luck will happen if they do any of these. The actors who try out for this play year after year know the risk they are taking and are willing to see if they will be cursed and get hurt.

The Straight Dope: What's the story on the curse of Macbeth?

Two curses are connected to Macbeth. People are not allowed to say "Macbeth" outside of the theatre or performances. The other curse is that the play brings bad luck to people because many have died during the play and backstage. One person was stabbed by a real sword instead of a fake on that was suppossed to be used in the performance. For someone to undo the first curse they have to leave the room, turn around 3 times, say a bad word or spit, and knock on the door and ask to be let back in.
