New World Record in Wireless Data Transmission: 40Gbps Over The Air

New World Record in Wireless Data Transmission: 40Gbps Over The Air | Wireless Technologies | Scoop.it

Academic experts at the Fraunhofer Institute and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany has claimed to have set a new world record of the wireless data transmission this week (a week after Samsung’s supposed 5G breakthrough), where they have successfully transmitted 40 gigabits per second over a one kilometre (0.62 miles) wireless link – a speeds that would allow the download of a DVD in a single second. Interestingly, distances of over one kilometer have already been covered by using a long range demonstrator which the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology set up between two skyscrapers.

“Millilink” is the name given to this project and the technology has the same speed just like the fastest commercial fibre optic links, and could represent a major breakthrough for carrier backbones, broadband Internet access in rural areas, and ultra-fast last mile access for customers who haven’t had fibre rolled out in their area.

Wireless Mobility Changes Everything for enterprise operations

Wireless Mobility Changes Everything for enterprise operations | Wireless Technologies | Scoop.it

The need for mobility spans the entire spectrum of enterprise operations. It’s gone from a “nice-to-have” option to a critical business requirement. From the front office to the distribution center and all points in between, industrial mobile technology creates the foundation on which successful, profitable businesses are now built.

Today, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, logistics providers—and virtually every other link in the supply chain—are taking a hard look at their current communications capabilities. Investing in the right mobile solutions now can be a significant competitive differentiator as operational environments become larger, more complex and more reliant on operations-critical, real-time information.

EarthLink re-enters wireless as a Clearwire MVNO offering WiMAX | FierceWireless.com

EarthLink re-enters wireless as a Clearwire MVNO offering WiMAX | FierceWireless.com | Wireless Technologies | Scoop.it

EarthLink today said it launched mobile WiMAX services as an MVNO of Clearwire, the result of a wholesale deal the two companies inked in September.

EarthLink is offering two basic plans: One is $29.95 per month and includes up to 2 GB of data at speeds of up to 3 Mbps, and the other costs $49.95 per month and includes up to 4 GB of data at speeds of up to 6 Mbps. Both plans are being offered on a no-contract basis.

Additionally, EarthLink said customers can buy incremental data packages starting at $4.95 per month that can be added or removed at any time. Those add-ons cost $4.95 for an extra 500 MB of data, $9.95 for an extra 1 GB and $17.95 for an extra 2 GB. EarthLink is offering its service with a mobile hotspot device that can connect up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets. The device currently costs $39.95 after a rebate.

Clearwire's mobile WiMAX network covers around 135 million POPs in 80 cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

This isn't EarthLink's first foray into wireless. The company in the middle of the 2000s agreed to build municipal Wi-Fi networks in locations including Philadelphia, but exited the business in 2007. EarthLink was also an investor in the MVNO Helio, along with SK Telecom, before that MVNO was sold to Virgin Mobile in 2008.
