2008 Rosso Piceno Superiore Italy's "Rosso Piceno of the Year"

2008 Rosso Piceno Superiore Italy's "Rosso Piceno of the Year" | Wine and wine tasting | Scoop.it

Paolo Capriotti's 2008 Rosso Piceno Superiore " Podere 72" was the Rosso Piceno of the Year in Italy (so was his 2007 and his 2009) and collected the following review in The Wine Advocate:

"The 2008 Rosso Piceno Superiore Podere 72 is a gorgeous, mid-weight red laced with dusty cherries, smoke, licorice, cedar, herbs and crushed flowers. It is just a touch lean in this vintage but nevertheless shows terrific energy and vibrancy from start to finish. This is one of my favorite entry-level reds from central Italy. Podere 72 is 50% Montepulciano, 50% Sangiovese. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.
Poderi San Lazzaro is one of my favorite under the radar producers. 90+ points"

Actually I'm not sure which radar Mr. Galloni thinks Paolo is flying under, since his wines show up wherever Italian wines are reviewed. And it seems just a LITTLE much to call $24 an entry level price. But then the wine only costs $20 here in Massachusetts, so what the heck?

As usual, the Podere 72's quality starts in the vineyard. The 72 stands for 1972, the year these 40 year old Montepulciano and Sangiovese vines were planted. Lovingly hand-tended by Paolo, who lives in the middle of them, their fruit is hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and aged for a year in used French oak. The result is . . . well it's "gorgeous, mid-weight . . . and laced with dusty cherries, smoke, licorice, cedar herbs, and crushed flowers."

It is frankly delicious, with actually a fuller, heavier weight than Mr. Galloni suggests, a silky texture from very ripe tannins and (as the man says) "terrific energy and vibrancy from start to finish."

I'm told it really does cost $24 on the West Coast. Here, it's $20. Before discount.

Is it a big deal to be the Rosso Piceno of the Year, or to own a few bottles of such a thing? In fact it is. This is terrific quality, the best of what is actually a very good category, and VERY fairly (especially here at Vin Bin) priced.

Top 10 Undiscovered Wines of Northeastern Italy

Top 10 Undiscovered Wines of Northeastern Italy | Wine and wine tasting | Scoop.it

As we travel across the regions of the Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, I am consistently amazed by the huge variety of wines available there. We tour these regions on bike or on foot - in the winter, by ski or snowshoe. Not only does there seem to be a new DOC region, with its own traditional wines, remarkable terroir and distinctive winemaking style around every corner, but an amazing number of them are relatively, if not completely, undiscovered in the US. When I return home, I don’t see them in any of my local wine shops between the north shore of Massachusetts all the way up into Maine; I do manage to find a select few via mail order, and only from a few of the very large producers. US wine importers seem to think Italy only produces wines in Tuscany, Sicily and Piedmont. Not to fault them, they are reacting to consumer demand. One purpose of this post to help spread the word on what we are missing, and perhaps improve the selection.

MA: Online Guide Supports Local Agriculture | Government Technology

MA: Online Guide Supports Local Agriculture | Government Technology | Wine and wine tasting | Scoop.it

Looking for fresh organic produce? Wondering where to take your family for some apple picking? Want to make a commitment to support local farmers and food producers?

If you live in Massachusetts, you’re in luck. The state’s Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR), has developed an interactive map for its website that features colorful graphic icons to direct residents and visitors alike to outdoor attractions like organic farms, maple sugar houses, wineries and farmers markets.

While Massachusetts is just under 11,000 square miles, it has a significant amount of agriculture within its borders. Rick LeBlanc, website and ag-tourism coordinator for the Massachusetts DAR, explained to Government Technology that the department needed an effective way to get the word out. “A lot of people forget about the different diversity of types of agriculture in our small little state,” he said.

According to LeBlanc, the department used to post on its website lists of farms in the state organized by county. But a farmer in Worcester with a farm name near the end of the alphabet complained that he wasn’t getting the visibility some others in the farming community enjoyed under this system. He was not alone in his desire for a better solution.
