International Conference on Degrowth in the Americas

International Conference on Degrowth in the Americas | Wild Resiliency | Scoop.it
Drawing from previous degrowth conferences in Paris and Barcelona in 2008 and 2010 respectively, the Montreal conference will focus on the particular situations and dynamics of the Americas. What does degrowth mean for our Hemisphere with its rich geographical, cultural, social and economic diversity? How can degrowth models apply to different contexts from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego? What does degrowth mean for the indigenous peoples of the Americas and their aspirations for their lands and peoples? How can degrowth concepts be made audible, understandable and acceptable to rich North Americans?

This conference held in Canada from 13-19 May will probably be much more relevant for the future than the upcoming Rio+20 summit.

New Club of Rome Report paints dark future for humanity | Wild Resiliency | Scoop.it

"2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years", by Jorgen Randers, launched by the Club of Rome on May 7, raises the possibility that humankind might not survive on the planet if it continues on its path of over-consumption and short-termism.

While global leaders are focused on financial debt crisis, the ecological and social crisis gets worse.

"Why Do Economies Stop Growing?"

"Why Do Economies Stop Growing?" | Wild Resiliency | Scoop.it
Many of the growth strategies tried around the world have turned out to have built-in limitations or decelerators – what one might call elements of unsustainability.

Absolute must-read article in Project Syndicate by 2001 Economics Nobel laureate Michael Spence. He seems to be one of the few economists able to think beyond the unfruitful austerity versus growth debate and link the crisis of the economy and economics with the sustainability crisis.

Empathy: The Most Valuable Thing They Teach at Harvard Business School

Empathy: The Most Valuable Thing They Teach at Harvard Business School | Wild Resiliency | Scoop.it

These probably aren't words that you were expecting to see in the same sentence — Harvard Business School and empathy. But as I reflect back on my time as a student there, I've begun to realize that more than anything else, this is one of the the most valuable things that the school teaches...

It's a trait that is sorely lacking at the moment. There's a case to be made that the American political system is suffering at present because empathy has been almost entirely exorcised from within its walls....

The place for me, however, where an appreciation of empathy is most undervalued, is in business. The potential upside for those in business who are able to be empathetic is huge...

You Already Won the Lottery

You Already Won the Lottery | Wild Resiliency | Scoop.it
Rich or poor, lucky in life or oppressed by it, we each must eventually accept the lot we were given and play the hand we have been dealt or else be but a pawn in a game where others determine the outcome for us.

...Being alive at this time can seem like losing the lottery in a big way as the collective level of life becomes intensely polarized and increasingly unfair. Yet there is another side to life and an inner inheritance that can give us a second chance at life no matter what circumstances we happen to be in.
