Citywide Wi-Fi to become the norm?

Citywide Wi-Fi to become the norm? | WiFiNovation | Scoop.it

This week in Japan, the city of Osaka rolled out a new initiative offering free wireless Internet citywide. Apparently this is a big deal for Japan as free to use Wi-Fi hotspots are few and far between.

The Osaka initiative is primarily aimed at aiding tourists in the city and reminds me of an initiative that Whistler had been looking into during my time there as a reporter. Hoping to provide guests and residents with even more of reason to stay in the village, Whistler officials looked into the feasibility of covering the entire village in delicious, free Wi-Fi. When it was learned it would cost around $500,000 to implement with an annual operating cost of $250,000 Whistler council backed down, but the intent was commendable.

Elsewhere in Canada, several cities offer free Wi-Fi at downtown cores or city-run facilities. The City of Edmonton offers it to anyone at many city parks and recreation centres while Windsor's business improvement association maintains a free network throughout its downtown core.

In Surrey, free Wi-Fi is available at libraries and city hall, but will we ever see it across the city? Due to Surrey's geographic size, the likelihood of this coming to fruition anytime soon isn't good, but as the demand grows and people become increasingly attached to their devices (for better or worse), businesses and cities alike are seeing free Wi-Fi as a key method of keeping customers and residents happy.

Marston’s chooses Ruckus Wireless for pub Wi-Fi

Marston’s chooses Ruckus Wireless for pub Wi-Fi | WiFiNovation | Scoop.it

“Access to Wi-Fi is becoming more and more important for our customers,” said Rob Derbyshire, operations manager at Marston’s.

“A key part of our strategy is to create an environment that is comfortable for families to visit and there is a huge opportunity in providing the same wireless connectivity as they have at home.”

Letting children settle down with a soft drink and a tablet streaming video could entice people to stay longer, he claimed, boosting profits for the chain....

Marston’s began with a trial in Birmingham but after just two days it found 50% of transactions were going through tablets rather than fixed tills. The decision was then made to push this out to more pubs across the country.

Part-way through the deployment, Marston’s is already seeing the business benefits from installing Wi-Fi.

Movirtu turns your tablet and laptop into a mobile phone

Movirtu turns your tablet and laptop into a mobile phone | WiFiNovation | Scoop.it

Movirtu has unveiled CloudPhone, a software platform that lets users make and receive calls over Wi-Fi networks using their mobile phone numbers on tablets and laptops without a regular SIM card.

Mobile operators have to find ways to compete with companies such as Skype, which offer Internet-based communications that are challenging traditional services. Movirtu’s CloudPhone will allow them to do that, CEO Carsten Brinkschulte said.

With the IP-based CloudPhone, tablets and laptops become virtual smartphones, letting users make calls when they are out of mobile coverage range or when their smartphone is low on battery, according to Movirtu.

Travellers can also use CloudPhone to cut roaming costs by making calls over Wi-Fi, Brinkschulte said.

In addition, operators can offer CloudPhone on smartphones as an alternative to improving cellular coverage using small cells. Instead of using small cells, mobile operators can rely on Wi-Fi networks, which are cheaper, Brinkschulte said.

The platform consists of client-side applications and software that operators install in their network. Calls are sent to all devices registered to a phone number, letting users choose whether they want to pick up using their tablet, regular smartphone or laptop.

Most laptops and tablets don’t have a regular SIM card. Movirtu instead moves that functionality into the network using what it calls Virtual SIMs. Virtual SIM technology has previously been used to enable multiple phone numbers to be active on a single standard SIM card.

To turn on a new device a PIN code is sent via SMS to a mobile phone. The code is then entered into the client. The communication, including phone calls, is protected using encryption.

Movirtu’s CloudPhone is based on WebRTC, a technology that adds real-time communications functionality to Web browsers via JavaScript APIs. It is backed by companies such Google, Mozilla, Ericsson and AT&T.

Virgin Media plans to extend its Wi-Fi service to 120 Tube stations in London

Virgin Media plans to extend its Wi-Fi service to 120 Tube stations in London | WiFiNovation | Scoop.it

Heywood said the rollout was ‘a tremendous success’ with Virgin customers accessing the service for more than eight million sessions over the Olympic period.

Speaking to Mobile, Virgin Media director of mobile Jamie Heywood said the company is planning to roll out a small cell and Wi-Fi network across the UK’s major city centres, following the successful launch of its Wi-Fi service in 70 London Underground stations this summer and a separate small cell trial on London’s Oxford Street earlier this year. He said: ‘We are looking at ways of extending our network to areas beyond the London Underground both inside and outside the home.’
