In the last few years there's been quite a bit written and posted on the internet about the end of the Mayan calendar and the end of the world. The actual day and time of this event is December 21st, 2012 at 11:11am GMT. That date is the start of the Solstice, which by the way happens every year.

Lets look at what is being said about some of the potential ways or events that will lead us to the end.

1) A rogue planet or brown star is heading our way and will arrive on December 21st. This is the most ridiculous and outrageous claim! Lets look at the details of why this isn't going to happen. First, the distances in our solar system are very, very big! If there was a planet headed our way our scientist and astronomers would have spotted it decades ago. Think about this, the voyager spacecraft that was launched in the 70's is just now reaching the limits of our solar systems. Keep in mind that it is the fastest manmade object traveling at over 40,000 miles per hour or 11 mile per second! So imagine an object heading our way at that speed or faster, it would take decades to reach us and thats if it were in our solar system already. If such an object is out there and outside our solar system it won't be here for thousands of years!

2) Polar Magnetic Shift. This could happen and has happened many times in the past. No known effects have taken place when this happens. The continents will not slide off the crust of the earth or will the Earths rotation change or stop.

3) A solar flare. Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

4) Coronal Mass Ejection, CME. Another phenomenon produced by the sun could be more disruptive. Known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), these solar explosions propel bursts of particles and electromagnetic fluctuations into Earth's atmosphere. Those fluctuations could induce electric fluctuations at ground level that could blow out transformers in power grids. The CME's particles can also collide with crucial electronics onboard a satellite and disrupt its systems. In the late 1800's the earth was hit by such an event. It caused power outages in our newly built power grid that had no protection. We are going into a solar maximum in 2012 to 2014, however it's predicted to be no different or more intense than previous solar maximums.

5) A large meteor, asteroid or comet will impact the earth. This has also happened many times in the past. The most recent that caused the extinction of all the dinosaurs happened about 65 million years ago. Can this happen again, most certainly! However Nasa is running a program called SpaceGuard program that finds and tracks large near earth objects. None have been detected that will pose a threat on December 21st. This program is being conducted openly and you can view results posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website,

6) The earth will change rotation. This is a physical impossibility period and will not happen on December 21st period!

These are just some of the claims that are being posted on the internet. There are many people in the world that truly believe that something is going to happen that will change life as we know it. I'm not one of those people!

December 21st will come and go with no major events that will destroy the earth. Now I can't speak for geopolitical instabilities, riots, or other natural events that take place everyday. But rest assured that our beautiful planet has been around for more than 4 billion years and will continue for another few billion years. Now I can't say the same for mankind with our wars, pollution and overall destruction.

If anyone has any comments I would love to hear them.

See you on December 21!!
