Watching: Skiing and the construction of awkwardness.

Watching: Skiing and the construction of awkwardness. | Why do people ski? My homepage | Scoop.it

I have been thinking today about the 'watching" of each other that occurs when people ski.  There is a "ranking" of sorts that happens in our watching of one-another.  "Am I as good as that person?"........"Do  I ski like that?".........."I am totally better than that person over there!"

As we watch, we can recognise the ability of people by the way they ski.  This allows us to construct a place for ourselves amongst skiers, as a "beginner", or perhaps as an "expert" and it also provides a recognition of ourselves and how we might in fact "look" on skis.

As the chairlift ascends overhead, there is an awareness of the gaze of others down upon us.  Such a gaze can lend itself to a fleeting feeling of awkwardness, or even perhaps urgency or panic, as we struggle to contain our own skiing for ourselves and not for the censorship of other people.

Skiing is an individual activity but is also inherently social, in that we seek the familiarity of others on the snow, doing as we do, in a way we know to be "right" or "wrong".  In this sense other people become our point of reference; our guide if you like, for our own skiing selves.

Whilst we may be viewed from the outside by others, our skiing (the skiing that is ours alone), is felt from within.

Just some thoughts.

The 3rd Space

Ever wondered why people are drawn to the places they go to participate in recreation? My feeling is that the places we go to, are those that allow us to re-create (ourselves), Each time we go to that place we come back a little more connected to who we are (really), and perhaps with a deeper sense of clarity and purpose. Some of life's stresses are easily solved by some re-creation in "our space"; a third space if you will, where we can go to to be away from home and work but where we feel " at home". I am not talking about going to a physical building, but rather an area where we feel relaxed, at peace, or any myriad of emotions; so long as it enables us to let go of the things we encounter daily that bind us up. Through whatever recreation activity we pursue (for me it could be skiing, running or mountain biking), the re-creation is that glorious afterglow we bask in after our run in the hills that we love, or a day on the slopes amidst the mountains that beckon us, or a ride on the trails that promise to steal us way from the daily grind.
For those who ski, the ski place of choice could be a deeply aesthetic one, or it could be historical; it could be that it offers the terrain we seek or that it promises quality snow all season. Whatever the reason, the "place" we go to is a place where we feel both away from what we know, yet somehow familiar and at ease within it. It is a 3rd space. The snow, the mountains, are my 3rd space, my re-creation space. The space I go to, to unpack the distractions that encumber and bury what makes me ME. Whether its the outdoors, the yoga room, the gym , the pool, the beach, take that space and make it YOURS.

Skiing the Planet

Skiing the Planet | Why do people ski? My homepage | Scoop.it
I guess in my "ideal " world, I would give up my day job and ski the planet. Snow draws people to it with special kind of magnetism. As Jean-Paul Sartre believed, when we ski, we ride upon a frozen liquid which holds us up...aloft of the mountain itself, but somehow nearer to it than we can ever hope to get.

When exercising most people do have a partner. So by having you significant other to be the one with you, it helps and inspiring. Its a great push also, because your other half knows you and can be able to push you more then you could push your self if you were by your self. You could make it a daily things like the article says. sd
