Why The Big Bang Theory provides an excellent marketing opportunity for parent-oriented products

                Companies can use the popular show, The Big Bang Theory, to successfully draw in and advertise their product to millions of viewers every day.  The Big Bang Theory is a gold mine for attention, it is one of the top ten most popular television shows according to tv.com and it continually increases in popularity.  From the year it was started in 2007, to the present day, the show has done nothing but gain viewers.  With so many viewers watching the show, the advertising opportunity during the show is extremely valuable.

                The Big Bang Theory was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.  It was first aired in 2007, and is still being aired on CBS to this day.  The show stars Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, and Kaley Cuoco.  The show takes place in Pasadena, California.  The show portrays the life of a couple of super-genius boys, Sheldon and Leonard with very little social skills living in an apartment across from an attractive, unintelligent girl named Penny.  While the Sheldon and Leonard may be very book smart, Penny constantly teaches them many life lessons that they know little about from living in the academic world their entire lives.  The humor is cute, smart, and sometimes inappropriate for children.  The humor either revolves around Sheldon and Leonard not knowing how to deal with everyday situations or it revolves around Penny’s stupidity.  The humor is often sexual, thus making the show not appealing to children.  The show is oriented towards adults ages 18-49.  This is a large age group, and most importantly, the people within this age group are old enough to make their own wages and spend money in the economy.

                The audience that The Big Bang Theory attracts is between the age group of 18-49.  The people that fall in this age group are old enough to work, make money, spend money, and raise families.  This is exactly who the commercials are oriented towards that appear during the broadcasts of The Big Bang Theory.  Some of the commercials include the advertising of, but not limited to: Vacuums, Ford Escapes, Volkswagon, Xfinity, Dodge, and Uverse.  All of these items are useful to parents that have families.  The Big Bang Theory is aired after the average work day, it is aired at 7:00 PM.  This is called the “Early Fringe” Daypart.  This is the time of day where both parents are usually home from work and have time to watch television.  With The Big Bang Theory’s adult humor and increasingly high popularity, it provides a perfect opportunity to market to parents of families.

                According to commonsensemedia.org, 60 percent of parents said that the sexual content in The Big Bang Theory is an issue.  While all of the humor in the show may not be sexually explicit, or drug or alcohol related, this type of humor does exist in the show.  The Big Bang Theory would not be a show that would be horrible for children to see, but it is defiantly not one that parents would want their kids watching on a regular basis.  Therefore, parents would not be extremely worried about having the show on while their kids are home.  Having a lot of parents watching the show really gives a great opportunity of advertisers to market to these parents in the commercials.

                All of the commercials aired during The Big Bang Theory’s broadcast are adult-oriented.  More specifically, they are mostly parent-oriented.  Any product that parents would need should be advertised during The Big Bang Theory for the best marketing effectiveness.  Parents need vehicles to drive their family from place to place, they may need television service to entertain their family, they may need vacuums to clean their house, they also need to feed their family with food.  All of these products were advertised during the broadcast.  There are no commercials oriented towards teens or kids, such as toys or games.  The humor and storyline of the show do not apply to these age groups, so the show would not attract people of those ages.

                Companies can use the popular show, The Big Bang Theory, to successfully draw in and advertise their product to millions of viewers every day.  The show provides a very large audience, a parent-oriented style of humor, and is broadcast during a time where the people it’s aimed towards will have time to view it.  With this extremely valuable time placement and financial stable audience, advertisers see The Big Bang Theory as a perfect time to advertise their product and make sure it is seen by those they want to buy it.

On top of the already high number of veiwers watching The Big Bang Theory, the number of viewers keeps growing and the show continues to increase in popularity.  Most impressively, it increases in such a wide range of different aged viewers that are able to spend money on goods.
