Social Structure 3 - India’s Supreme Court Postpones Dalit Decision Again

Social Structure 3 - India’s Supreme Court Postpones Dalit Decision Again | White Tiger Project - India | Scoop.it
The Christian Dalits are seeking an amendment to the law that excludes them from the country's reservation which guarantees a number of government jobs and college places for Dalits. The law has been in place since the 1950's, but only applies to Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh Dalits. Muslim Dalits are also excluded.
Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh Dalits will lose their rights and benefits if they convert to Christianity. Millions of Christian Dalits are seeking to end their grinding poverty.
Efforts to change the law have made little progress because legal officials justify the exclusion of Christian Dalits from benefits based on the grounds that the caste system was only part of the Hindu religion and therefore only applied to members of its faith.

Manish Kumar, 15, a member of India's "Untouchable" caste, was beaten, thrown under a train and was murdered for writing a love letter to his sweetheart from a higher caste. It is alleged that police watched as the incident happened.

Caste-based incidents such as rapes, murders and beatings, are common. The lower castes are victims of the higher castes.
The caste system groups the dominant Hindu population into 4 var-nas, or categories. The priest Brahmins at the top, are followed by the warrior Kshatriyas, then the merchant or farmer Vaishyas and the aritsan Sudras. The Untouchables are beneath this hierarchy.
