Even a single species of bacteria can positively affect soils and plants

Even a single species of bacteria can positively affect soils and plants | Wheat World | Scoop.it
Microbes deep in the soil influence plant health by releasing potent natural antibiotics such as PCA (phenazine-1-carboxylic acid). PCA-producing bacteria thrive on roots of dryland wheat throughout the Columbia Plateau, a major wheat-producing region in central Washington and Oregon, but their role in this important ecosystem was something of a mystery. Now the work of an international team of scientists provides direct evidence for the first time that these bacteria affect not only the wheat, but the soil around it.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) flux responds exponentially to nitrogen fertilizer in irrigated wheat in the Yaqui Valley, Mexico - ScienceDirect

Nitrous oxide (N2O) flux responds exponentially to nitrogen fertilizer in irrigated wheat in the Yaqui Valley, Mexico - ScienceDirect | Wheat World | Scoop.it
Insofar as fertilizer use in Yaqui Valley is likely similar to high-productivity irrigated cereal systems elsewhere, our results provide evidence for a global triple-win scenario: large reductions in agricultural GHG emissions, increased farmer income, and continued high productivity.

Labor productivity and employment gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa

Labor productivity and employment gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa | Wheat World | Scoop.it
in four Sub-Saharan African countries, the agricultural sector is not a bastion of low productivity but, rather, a large reservoir of underemployed workers.
Victor Kommerell's insight:
Ag sector always low labour productivity? In four SSA countries, ag sector is large reservoir of underemployed workers but not about low productivity. To improve output per worker in Ag that employs the most people, need more research on labor demand by smallholder farmers. Higher Ag productivity growth with positive impacts on rural people's non-farm activities, which are tightly linked with Ag.

Wheat—the cereal abandoned by GM

Wheat—the cereal abandoned by GM | Wheat World | Scoop.it

The sudden appearance of crop diseases can cause an irreparable economic shock, particularly to smallholder farmers in developing countries. Wheat blast, for example, is a devastating fungal disease from South America, which emerged in Bangladesh in 2016 ([ 1 ][1]). It is currently controlled by quarantine but could easily spread to other wheat-growing areas, which could threaten food security.
